Where to eat Japanese food in Vernon: The Best Restaurants and Bars

November 15, 2019 Merry Kessler

Reviews on Japanese food in Vernon, British Columbia, Canada. Although perhaps less flashy than its southern Okanagan neighbors Kelowna and Penticton, Vernon is a year round getaway offering an abundance of fun attractions from sunny beaches and golf courses in the summer to powdery ski slopes in the winter. The area's back country trails provide great exploration points, whether by bike, horseback riding, hiking, snowshoeing or snowmobiling. The pristine scenery of the Rockies surrounds the valley's plentiful vineyards.

It's very surprising to find a Hawaiian restaurant in a long-abandoned restaurant on a back street in Vernon of all places, but it is definitely a pleasant surprise. The Ahi Bowl was filling and although the tuna was an industrial grade (you can't really expect prime sushi grade at these prices) it was delicious. The large selection of veggies are really a treat and since it's an AYCE place you certainly won't leave hungry. The service is great, the decor very original, and it's overall a very nice place to have a great lunch!

Sushi 1 Japanese

Visiting Vernon for a drive around the valley, and we had a hankering for sushi. Saw this place and decided to give it a shot. At first, I thought it was closed there being nobody inside (Friday at lunch). But it was indeed open and we went in. Decor is a little sparse and unsettling; wasn't as welcoming as it could be. But the proprietor was very friendly and welcoming. Sat us at a table and we ordered Bento boxes. I was sure the menu said two prawns came with the tempura but I only got one. So I asked for a menu to make sure but the menu I got the second time around said one prawn. I think I originally got an unaltered menu. No matter, the tempura was crisp and fresh, the prawns firm. Sushi and sashimi were well prepared. The gyoza was small and non-descript. Miso soup was typical as were the edamame beans. Salad was drizzled in a funny purple dressing, atypical for this type of salad. Interestingly, the sashimi is typically served on a bed of stringed, fresh radish but ours were on dried, uncooked, rice noodles. Looks the same but completely wrong. We brought it to the attention of the mom who owns the restaurant. She explained they had no radish and used the noodles as a substitute, profusely apologizing the entire time. Weird...Price is average for what you get. Bathroom is very small but clean. All in all, an average meal for an average price in an average establishment. Three stars.

A GF and I had dinner here a few weeks ago and it was great! The food was very quick and so flavorful! I had the Raku Hatchimen. Though the portion was fairly small, the flavor was great and the presentation was nice. Loved the fried garlic chip! The interior is warm and welcoming and the staff were nice as well.I will be back again

Sakura Sushi & Japanese Grocery

After reading several reviews of restaurants, I decided to check this place out, as I wanted a relatively quiet and relaxing evening. This is just what I found. Though I found the establishment a little hard to find, the prior reviews gave me a good idea what to look for and what to expect. The menu is rather simple, with limited but interesting options at a reasonable price. I enjoyed the combo I ordered, as well as the ad on. My meal consisted of miso soup, a large order of spicy salmon sushi and a smaller order of tuna sushi, a noodle salad and on the side, sunomono salad. Following my meal, I indulged in the free green tea. Overall, I enjoyed the food, and the experience. Consider checking it out!

This restaurnat is in a grubby part of Vernon with poor parking, however we decided to give it a try. The menu was huge so enjoyed reading all the choices, we settled on lunch boxes as it gave us a variety. We found the food a bit bland but plentiful, we had ordered a side of gyozo which we ended up taking home as there was so much food. the service was very good.

Our daughter and her fiance wanted to try Umami for lunch right before Mother's Day. We were greeted warmly -- the waiter remembered that I had called ahead to inquire about their hours. The "kids" loved the sushi, which is the main offering here. The other foods -- shrimp tempura, soups and noodle dishes were excellent. We will return next time we visit Vernon.
