While driving from Furano to Otaru via smaller roads, we were having no luck finding a good place to eat lunch. The one place that looked promising in Tobetsu (å½å¥) had just closed for the afternoon, but a staff member said there was a small restaurant in a building next to Tobetsu Ishikari Station (å½å¥ç³ç©é§ ).We arrived in front of an old warehouse that looked to offer little (see picture). Inside, was a small market - selling local vegetables and goods. In a corner, the noren (door curtain) for a tiny restaurant (see next picture). Most of these little restaurants serve up a pretty basic soba, udon, ramen menu. Our hopes were not high.But we went to check out the menu, and with no other options decided to have lunch there. After all, it did have nice wood tables and a friendly proprietor.THE FOOD WAS FANTASTICI ordered a chicken curry soup (expecting it to be made with the pre-made roux many of these places use, and thus tasting like a cheap Japanese curry). My wife and mother-in-law ordered soba and udon dishes (also with rather low expectations).To say we were surprisingly elated with what was served would be a gross understatement.The ladies received delicious bowls of hand-made udon and soba, served in a stock that had obviously been made from scratch (not the pre-made stuff from a can).My curry? OMG! Rivaling any genuine Indian curry restaurantâs offering (see picture). The soup never saw any of that horrible roux. It was made with just the right blend of spices to give it a sublime taste that made me want more. A selection of asparagus, carrot, eggplant, pumpkin, bell pepper, and sweet potato complemented the perfectly prepared chicken leg.RECOMMENDATION: I recommend any one of the three curry soups on the menu. There is also pork (è±è§ç ®) and vegetable (éè). If they are anywhere as tasty as the chicken (ããã³) they are not to be missed out on.
