Where to Eat in Moyobamba: The Best Restaurants and Bars

August 15, 2017 Brandee Mangan

Moyobamba (Spanish pronunciation: [moʝoˈβamba]) or Muyupampa (Quechua muyu circle, pampa large plain, "circle plain") is the capital city of the San Martín Region in northern Peru. Called "Santiago of eight valleys of Moyobamba" or "Maynas capital". There are 86 000 inhabitants, according to the 2007 census. Some 3,500 species of orchids are native to the area, which has led to the city's nickname of The City of Orchids. The city is the capital of both Moyobamba Province and Moyobamba District.

Gremcor

You would not really think that you have difficulties getting a coffee in a region like Alto Mayo, where some of the best coffees in the world are grown. But it happened several times that I asked for a coffee after lunch, and either people said they had none or they had something left they cooked in the morning and gave it to me with cooked water for adding it.
Here is the solution for Moyobamba: GREMCOR is owned by a family of coffee growers, and they have bought a real professional italian coffee machine and they have real baristas who create for you a perfect cappuchino with nice hearts or leaves on it. And this made with their own coffee, carefully roasted.
I had not expected to find such perfection after a week in Moyobamba in the rainforest, luckily a frien took us to this place. It is at walking distance from the main square, actually.

Recreo Ecoturistico Milan

Recreo Ecoturistico Milan is a place just outside Moyobamba where locals and tourists can find fresh regional food offer. Especially the fish dishes are recomended - we had fish there - since they have own "picigranjas" - large ponds where they grow different kinds of fish. They offer Tilapia (not original from Peru, but grown in San Martin Region since a couple of years) as well as Doncella and Paiche, which are tipical fish from the peruvian rainforest. Our dishes were fresh and tasty.
These are also part of what makes the place romantic: there is a lot of green surrounding it. We just passed by for lunch and a walk after visiting the Wakanqui center. But you can also spend a day there, it looks very promising for group events, with special seatings apart from the main restaurant, and swimming pools.
Service is friendly and quick. Big, clean kitchen.

A good place, with typical dishes from the region. I had a Cocona Sour, it was delicious. Then the cecina with chorizo and tacachos, fried plantains, was great too! The chonta salad was very fresh and refreshing to start. the service was great and they help in choosing the best dish. the place is always packed with locals and the prices are in the middle.

Aromacafe

Fundo Alegria is a really nice place with a lot of space, a pool, restaurant / bar etc. I would say an excellent place for business, couples, family or with friends - they have a playground for children and a big conference hall. Food was good, a lot of choices, good service. We thought it was a little pricy, but later that day for dinner at a local (not even close as nice as Fundo Alegria) we had to pay even more so for tourists in the area is really good value for money!

Parrillas

After spending nearly three months living in Moyobamba I decided I wanted to eat something else than rice, potatoes and beans. This restaurant offers some of the best grilled food in Moyobamba, for a reasonable price. It is a restaurant that breathes a more western atmosphere than most Peruvian restaurants even though at times the service is a little lax. The food is great, although I recommend asking for fries specifically because if you don´t you will get potatoes which are cold. It is very close to the Plaza de Armas and you can sit outside if you would like to (the street is relatively quiet).
