La Tingana Refugio Natural

La Tingana is a unique experience. It is a protected area of rain forest in the Alto Mayo coffee region. When you are in Moyobamba, you can book a trip through your hotel or a local tour operator.
You get up early, best departure time is 5 or 6 a.m. - you will be brought by car to the little harbor at Rio Mayo that is next to the park, about 50 min drive, there the park guardians pick you up by motor boat, another 50 min, on Rio Mayo and the smaller Rio Avisado. The you get to the ecological park info center, where you get breakfast and learn about the animal you will see.
The natural reserve has been created by an association of local peasants with the help of the regional government and the German development organization giz. The locals who have been hunting the animals a decade ago are now looking for their protection.
We went on with smaller boats without motor. Then we started to see a lot of birds, little monkeys playing above our heads, and a snake lying around on a tree. You will go several hours into the reserve, and then come back to the info center for lunch, which is prepared also by the peasants - of corse they have a clean kitchen and know the rules how to take care for tourists meals. I looked into the kitchen, and at lunch I ate my plate including salad.
After lunch we could have a nap in the hammocks, which are put up under a roof, just in case it rains. The local guides were friendly and quite funny.
In the afternoon, they brought us back to the car.

This is a fairly modern Cathedral - looks cool on the outside and modern simple on the inside. The Cathedral is worth popping into if you are on the square.

We visited to see the orchids which were disappointing - not many flowering. The humming birds were spectacular though and well worth the visit. There are several different species, and a nice kind of tree house viewing platform. But the place is a bit half-baked. No information - no official mention of an entrance price for instance, no kiosk, no ticket. A young girl just came up to us, and asked for PEN 10. On the website, and in Lonely Planet it mentions that there are trails in the forest of two, four and six hours - we'd hoped to walk, but there was no information about this at all. There was a sign to a restaurant, which appeared to be closed. As often happens here, the tour itself was short, and the explanation brief. We asked if we could sit alone at the top of the hill, to watch the birds, and the young girl left us, but she told us we had to leave within two hours - the entrance fee allowed us to stay for just this amount of time. Pity, could have stayed much longer, watching the beautiful diminutive birds. Moto fee from the town, PEN 6 - the driver had trouble finding the place.

This is like a Peruvian Garden center.
Lots of nice flowers and plants and a spectacular view. There are many nice orchids.
You can also buy a lot of reasonably price souvenirs.
There is an area with crocodiles and some scuzzy geezer kept throwing stones and stuff at them in front of his son - he was twice my size and looked a bit scabous so I didn't intervene.
Staff are really friendly and they sell nice amazonian ice lollies.
Would recommend if you like flowers and plants!

Morro de Calzada

Reviewed By kentmoney1 - Worcester MA

I arrived at Moyobamba from Tarapoto at about 9am. I decided to step out of the city to climb the Morro, since it caught my eye. I found a combi in Callao and Benavidez that takes you to the crossroads right on the little town of Calzada. The ride takes about took about ten minutes. It cost me 2.50 soles. From there I took a moto taxi to the entrance. I haggled the price down from 10 to 8 soles. The entrance fee is 3 soles. From the entrance it's a hike of about an hour and a half. It's tough in some parts of the climb but nothing that will set you back. The walk has a jungle feel like the treks I did in Tarapoto and Tingo Maria. There's monkeys and birds and loads of insects to see. Once at the top the views are pretty amazing. I walked back to the crossroads and just waited for another combi to take me back to Moyobamba.

A small museum with lots of information on the history, archeological finds and todays culture of the region. You have to be able to understand Spanish though, as there is a lot of written information but only in Spanish.
