Castel Fragsburg

THE FINE ART OF TRUE PLEASURE "Nourish the body well so that the soul will want to reside there" is a saying apocryphally attributed to Winston Churchill. He would have truly loved it here, as we cook nourishing and refined gourmet cuisine in the finest sense of the word. A defiant fusion of hearty Alpine fair and Mediterranean opulence. In our gourmet restaurant, we love to amaze and astonish our guests. No matter how many times we step out onto our glass loggia and look out over the parapet of the Panorama Terrace at the stunning, cinematic views of Merano, we always find something new to marvel at in the ravishingly beautiful natural surroundings. There couldn't be a more ideal setting for the exquisite dishes prepared by our head chef Christoph Terschan. A culinary virtuoso, Christoph fuses the many facets of regional cuisine with the memorable delicacies he has encountered in far-away lands in the course of his career. These reinterpretations make for immensely rich and creative food. Whether it's an agreeable lunch you partake of, or a sumptuous gourmet dinner, you will invariably have a sense of savoring life to the full. The sublime cuisine is of course rounded off by impeccable yet affectionate service and the excellent advice of our sommelier when choosing from the fine wines in our cellar.

The location of this restaurant in Castel Fragsburg above the town of Merano is excellent. The views from the restaurant balcony are stunning.
We had the five course dinner menu four evenings - included in your room rate. A different menu each evening. Superb and innovative food. If you want you can replace any of the five courses on the menu of the evening with something from the small regular menu. Extensive winelist. Good service.
This was our second stay here and we would love to come back, but I do have some issues - detailed below.
1. We were a group of four couples with a great interest in wine and food, coming to Merano for the food, wine and landscape. One of these four couples has stayed at Castel Fragsburg 10 times previously. They had discussed with the management when making our Reservations that we would like a nice dinner table on the balcony with a great view. The first two mornings and evenings we had a crap table by the interior wall with close to no view. They complained and we got a nice table, but after that the head waiter totally ignored all eight of us. Extremely unprofessional. I do not know how stern they were with the head waiter, but I do not like to be ignored. I do understand that Castel Fragsburg has many repeat customers and have to try to make the best for everyone, but still.
2. Service. The service is good and attentive, but not at Michelin one star level. Too few waiters, that are really busy. They do not run in the dining room/balcony but they for sure walk as fast as it is possible to do without shifting over to a slow jogging. If you drop a fork or knife or your napkin you have to pick it up again yourself and ask for a clean piece of cutlery as this isn't automatically offered to you.
I think that they do single couples better than a party of eight.
3. Food. The food is great, innovative and varied but not Michelin one star level. E.g. when we all had foie gras as a starter at least one of us eight received a totally overfried piece of goose liver or when we had fish at least one got completely overcooked fish and the same with meat at least one of us received an over-fried piece of meat. You do not complain about things like this when you are a group of friends having a nice dinner, you simply notice them. And the kitchen of course knows that Guide Michelin inspectors never visit in groups of eight.
This said we would love to come back, but then as two or four persons, as I do not think that Castel Fragsburg handles larger groups in a good way.
The sommelier Riccardo arranged two excellent pre-dinner wine tastings for us in a separate room, one with local wines from Alto Adige and one with wines from Southern and Eastern Italy. Really great and interesting. And presented by Riccardo in a most charming and educational way.

Hidalgo Restaurant

Hidalgo, with more than 40 years of tradition, is never tired of offering something new: in the new “restaurant in the restaurant”, the Hidalgo Beef Tasting japanese-mediterranean style, you will be able to sample Kobe Beef and Wagyu from Japan, as well as the first Wagyu from South Tyrol and other delicious kinds of meat. In the classic grill restaurant, gourmets will be pampered with mediterranean antipasti, handmade pasta, risottos and desserts. Our meat and fish have been cooked to perfection in a 900° C Beef Grill without oil or fat for 6 years now. Also the stone cellar, with one of the biggest wine collections of the country, is something to be proud of. And when it comes to living comfort, the modern Hidalgo Suite Apartments leave nothing to be desired. Open 365 days a year!

this little gem is hidden in a small village outside Bolzano, maybe 15 minutes away. Well worth the drive. This may be the best meat I've ever had in Italy.
The owner is very friendly, takes the time to thank you for your business. the decor is definitely upscale but the atmosphere is also very inviting and casual dress is fine. You can wear anything you want here. You'll find people wearing everything from jeans and t-shirts to fancy dresses and hats. it really was quite a lovely atmosphere for dining. They were even very accomodating about us bringing ourr small dog into the restaurant (I wish you could find more nice restauants in the US where this was the case).
We had delicious salads - amazingly fresh and well seasoned. it is NOT easy to find a great salad in Italy in the winter! Two of us had tartare of beef, which they said was the best ever. We all had steaks. Not only was the meat completely fabulous, but their portions come in two sizes listed - 180 grams and 300 grams. How great is that? Again, something I have never seen in Italy.
We had such a lovely dinner. We were so happy that we sort of stumbled upon this place and we can't wait to go back.
oh - and they actually have a pretty worldly wine list for a restaurant in Italy!

Charming probably pre-World War One restaurant in central Meran. The dining room is elegant with art nouveau touches and has well-separated tables, proper white linen table cloths and napkins and nice old cutlery. The large windows were open when we visited leaving the restaurant agreeably cool. The food was excellent, including the complimentary amuse-geueles of delicious 'liquid pizza'. We also really enjoyed the smoked mackerel and ravioli. Friendly efficient service from the multi-lingual wait-staff. Not cheap at €87.50 for two, but a very pleasant experience.

Whether you're just passing through Lana or exploring the city by foot, this location is by far the most relaxing. The food is good and you can't beat Forst beer! This beer garden is set beneath old chestnut trees and is convienently located to all of Lana
You can access the beer garden by parking in the city parking lot (1 Euro - all day); it's just across the street.
There is a very interesting church nearby and plenty of people watching opportunities. Sit back with a cool Forst and enjoy!

Had dinner there with my wife on the Easter Weekend 2012. The expectations were tremendousely high given we read lots about the owner and they also were promoted by Lufthansa Business Class in October of 2011. The 1-star Michelin designation led us to have such high expectations. We were thinking this is to match a Gault-Millau 17 points restaurant.
Our impression: impressive ancient restored building. Nice interior; beautiful mix between old and new. The light in the dark gives a very intimate atmosphere which might be a bit too dark for some people. Reception was speedy and we were lucky being able to chose the table we like most.
The menue is, as expected, a careful selection of local dishes. We ordered the regional set menu. The wine order, i.e. two glasses of sparkling, one botte of white and one bottle of red, could only be ordered at a too late stage, notably past the amuse-bouche and the bread selection was brought to our table. The sparkling wine is to enjoy before and certainly not after. Then, the sequence came back in order. The courses were very good, fresh local ingredients and lots of love put into the setting and serving. The point I "criticise" is that when going to such a restaurant, you expect the special "something", the taste that is new to you, the dish you have never had before, the one authentically regional surprise that you still remember in one or two years time. That did not happen. No mistake, the food was great but great is not good enough for a place that raises such high expectations.
The service as such was good but certain little attention to detail was missing; when getting bread and butter, after finishing, I either wish to have all these dishes and bowls removed from my table or given some more. And all of that reasonably quick, given the place was max 1/3 full that night. The idea of leaving all wine bottles on a small table with a flower bouquet is very nice but that would then also require someone to constantly be on top of things and come by the table more frequently.
All in all: special atmosphere, great food, good wine selection. If you look for the special culinary experience and have already been to several world class restaurants (though being able to compare) you might end up missing the special moment here.

We stopped here for lunch after a pleasant stroll along the Brandeis Waalweg. The restaurant has amazing views over the Etsch valley. Service was friendly and efficient and as it was not very busy the waiter was able to practice his English with us. We had a really tasty apfel strudel each with apfelschorle to drink. A very pleasant place to sit and relax.
