This was an evening program we attended with our NatHab tour. There was an excellent speaker, short film and a tasting of some of the unusual food and berries found in the area. Very well done. Space was limited due to the size of our group and the number of the exhibits but very worthwhile.

The Eskimo Museum of Churchill, is now called the Itsanitaq Museum, which is more inclusive of the peoples of the Arctic region. This little museum has been collecting artifacts for over 7 decades and they have assembled an amazing collection. They have many beautiful hand-carved native artworks, and artifacts, and antique photographs, and more! The docents are very helpful and knowledgeable. Don't over look the small gift shop; we got a beautiful glass Christmas tree ornament to remember Churchill.

I traveled to the CNSC Nov. 8-14 for a learning vacation led by Dr. James Halfpenny. My experience was amazing, and I would strongly suggest that you too take one of the many courses offered here (either directly with the center or with an instructor of your choice).
CNSC accommodations were much nicer than expected. The rooms were more spacious than I had expected, w/ 4 football locker-room sized closets, 2 sets of comfortable bunk beds and a writing table under the huge picture window that runs the width of the room. There is a Reading light for each bed should you be a night owl or an early bird. At no time was I too cold or hot.
Showers were private and had plenty of hot water that is on a timer. Simply push the handle for another round. The building is LEED certified so I appreciated that everything was constructed with conservation in mind. Thumbs up!!
The cafeteria has plenty of food options including vegetarian. Water, coffee, hot tea, and cocoa are offered. Due to the train not running any more soda was not an option.
I salute the hard working ladies who run the kitchen. It is hard work and the pace is hectic, but the ladies were always welcoming and had a happy smile. Each guest is asked to take a turn helping with the dishes. A suggestion if you are going....bring a pair of long, heavy duty dish gloves. The water is HOT and the poor ladies don't have a very good supply of gloves that are in good shape. When your turn at dish duty is done you can leave your gloves behind and I am SURE they would be much used and appreciated.
The lecture rooms are perfect for the nightly presentations. The rooms are pretty sound proof so you don't hear noise from the classes going on all around you. There is also a room w/ TV/DVD player for documentaries. I looked forward to our nightly learning sessions and will definately be returning.
The location is a ways out from Churchill. It was perfect for viewing the Northern lights as you can hop in your vehicle and within minutes be in a location with no light pollution. The stars and lights can also be viewed from an outside viewing platform or from an inside sky dome room (when the winds are howling, Burrrrrr!! )
As for people staying in town and this being the #3 thing to do in Churchill? Frankly this isn't really a tourist attraction. It is located a way out of town and though the drive is easy (and who knows what you may see!) I don't think you would find much of interest if you are not staying or considering staying there. There is a small gift shop, and upstairs you can see/touch a polar bear hide, but other than that you wont see much. It would kinda be like visiting an empty school w/ most areas being off limits. This is an outstanding place to stay and learn, but not so much of a tourist attraction.
So, great location, comfort, learning facilities, people, and plenty of food. I highly recommend taking a course here. The prices are quite reasonable and the experience priceless.....you won't be sorry. Thanks to all at the CNSC.

They have 32 dogs. The dogs love to pull the sleds and carts. The dogs get very excited when the carts are brought out. They want to be chosen. The route in the summer is short but exciting going around the corners. They change dogs after 2 rides.
The dogs are well kept. You can see they are healthy.
The staff talks about how they are fed and cared for. There is no veterinarian in Churchill. They fly a vet in once a year and they will fly a sick dog to Winnipeg at a great expense.

Arrived by tundra buggy to see Prince of Wales Fort and have dinner at the pop up restaurant RAW:Churchill. Fort is very cool. Bear guard to keep us safe. Docent gave great presentation/information on the fort. Dinner at RAW: Churchill was great. Highly recommend a visit to the Fort and if you have the opportunity for dinner, take it.

We traveled on Bay Shore Road in a shuttle touring Churchill before we left. Beautiful rocky landscape and tundra. It allows you to see how massive the bay is and you also spot a wrecked airplane, Miss Piggy along with a squatter's camp. It's a very interesting area that loops around the coast and back to town. Very scenic!

This is the only Churchill shop where you will find *only* items designed & made in Churchill, and meet the craftsman/maker himself. Jewelry, linocut relief prints, and glass work, unique to Churchill. Extended hours and accessibility during 'bear season', all efforts are made to be open for all arriving & departing planes.

This is a kiosk at the airport wherein the artist sells souvenirs that he has made himself. There were some nice souvenirs that we could not find anywhere else in Churchill

I don’t get why this is an attraction. We drove by it and they asked if we wanted to get out and look around and we did not. Plane crashed during take off and the town just never got around to cleaning up the wreckage.

From the videos at the railroad station museum, and from afar, this looks like a wonderful place. However, there is no real access for casual visitors yet, so don't put it on your bucket list until it is.

One should go to this site when it is open otherwise with the risk of bears you may be disappointed. The battery is modestly interesting with it's example of a cannon. It also offers a view of Ft Prince of Wales across the river if you don't plan on an actual tour of the fort. Here also is an example of the rugged coastline at the mouth of a major river in Hudson Bay.
