These Gardens have a perfect layout to entice you to spend a day strolling the paths and inspecting all the different varieties of plants there. Highlights for us were the range of dahlias and the tropical greenhouse. It would have been nice to do the Botanical underworld in English (at the time we went the languages were alternating between Italian and German), and it's just bad luck for us that the aviary was filled with birds that we find in our back yard at home but it didn't take away from the overall experience. We were here for about 3 hours but could easily have stayed longer.

A beautiful spot, with wooden seats, from which you can overlook the Etsch valley and the Dolomites. The quickest way to reach it is to park near the Gasthof Alpenrose, halfway between Hafling and Vöran, and follow the signs. It's a 30 minute walk to the Knottnkino, with a couple steep points, but completely worth the effort.

If you are at Garda Lake with your car just drive to the top or near the top of Monte Baldo. If the end of the queue to use the Funivia is outside the building, you're going to wait almost 2 hours to start the journey up the mountain. Then you'll have to wait again at the middle station. We spent a good part of the day waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting. And the view from the top is not actually worth the wait. The hiking trails are gravelly and overrun with tourists. Maybe I'd come here again, but I certainly wouldn't pay to do it.

It has been ages since I visited this old castle with the most stunning view over the Etschtal. I was blown away how beautiful the castle had been renovated and how interesting the museum is. I would definitely classify it as a must see when in the area. The only criticism is that whilst everything is labeled in German and Italian, it was not in English, which is a true pity!!!!

Merano is great; stay by the river & you have many attractive easy walks to hand, such as the Tappeiner weg.
I recommend a wonderful circuit; first walk along the river 10-15 mins (heading upstream) to the start of the Tappeiner weg. Follow the full length of this weg - it's an easy, near flat walk on a good surface. At its end follow signs for the Waalweg Algund & take this path, which follows a narrow water channel. Again easy, near flat. When you reach a junction by a pension & see a large colour signboard mentioning Algund & Vellau go DOWN the road 200m then turn right & follow Bergweg Algund through the vineyards into the village. So far, about 2.5hrs. Now take the little chairlift up to Vellau then the cute bucket lift up to Leiteralm (note: these close at lunchtime. Then 5 mins walk at top to nice café, great views). Then either go back down the 2 lifts & take the bus back to Meran, or take the stunning Hohenweg walk along the mountain edge then return to Meran by Cable Car, then BUS (long walk otherwise) then another little chairlift. Total with lunch etc 6hrs. STUNNING!

The Schnatterpeck Altar in Niederlana is one of the most amazing altars in the area of South Tyrol. It was created by Hans Schnatterpeck and is one of the largest altars in the gothic style. The visit is by guided tour only. The tours will most probably be in German only. It is possible to take pictures and walk behind the altar during the tour.

Vorausgeschickt: der etwas längere Fußmarsch hoch hinauf lohnt; aber es gibt nach endlos engen Sträßchen vor dem Schloß ebenfalls kostenfrei einige Parkplätze.
Ein Schloßzugang ist nur im Rahmen einer Führung möglich; unsere Führung war äußerst Informativ - mit einem Trinkgeld ist dies honoriert worden.
Erfahren haben wir: Erbaut im 13. Jahrhundert von den Herren von Marling, zählt Schloß Lebenberg zu den schönsten und größten vollständig eingerichteten Schlössern Südtirols, die heute noch in Privatbesitz sind und - so unser Guide - mit 3 Generationen selbst bewohnt wird. 1426 ging es von den Herren von Marling an die aus Franken (Bayern) stammenden Herren von Fuchs über, die es in den kommenden Jahrhunderten umbauen und vergrößern ließen. Schloss Lebenberg blieb bis zum Aussterben ihres Geschlechts im 19. Jahrhundert im Besitz der Herren von Fuchs. Heute gehört die Anlage der Familie van Rossem.
Die dreigeschossige Kapelle zum Hl. Stephan aus dem 14. Jahrhundert, malerische Innenhöfe, ein französischer Ziergarten sowie ein Spiegelsaal im Rokokostil erzählen von glorreichen Zeiten. Sehenswert sind auch der Rittersaal sowie der Waffensaal. Zudem wurden einige wertvolle gotische Fresken kürzlich wiederentdeckt.
Öffnungszeiten von April bis Ende Oktober von Montag - Samstag ab 10.30 - 12.30 Uhr und von 14.00 - 16.30 Uhr; die Führung dauert ca. alle 40 Minuten.

These are paths alongside irrigation channels, some hundreds of years old. Most are accessible by bus [choose to walk downhill!] and there is an excellent little booklet from the Tourist Office for 3 euros with maps and info - don't be put off by them being only available in German or Italian - the key info is clear - length, time, bus link, refreshment places en route etc and, of course a useful map.
An English translation is available online if you down load it before you go .....
