This meal was all we had hoped for after a long drive from the south. We always travel back on the Ouistreham-Portsmouth ferry but our usual dining place is shut on Sunday evenings, so we were delighted to find Au Pied des Marais was open. The meal started with a delicious asparagus amuse bouche, then starters (I had veloute), main courses (superbly cooked duck), refreshing apple sorbet, hot camembert in a very thin pastry case, and truly wicked profiteroles, washed down with pouilly fume. All travel stresses melted away and we slept most contentedly on the overnight ferry home.

If you are looking for a place to have a "special dinner" (birthday, romantic etc), that's the restaurant in Houlgate you want. The food is very good, midway between traditional and sophisticated French cuisine. Service is great. Little hint: get the Paris Brest for dessert, it's exquisite.

Lovely sea food - mussels, oysters what can beat them, really nice. The vin rouge de la maison was also very good. Staff were attentive (but very busy) and service was the right speed. The restaurant was full and turning diners away...apart from the ones who waited for 45 minutes to get in....well worth the wait though

Restaurant looked very inviting, but unfortunately the food was not tasty or seasoned in any way, carpaccio du beuf and the Osso bucco was very bland to say the least, scampi bites was shocking, calzone pizza was the same all very bland.
Food came very fast I felt rushed as if they wanted you in and out for the next customers.
We have ate a lot in France over the years and this restaurant does France no favours

We came here on the recommendation of the owner of la Mare Elan-good prices and generous helpings - he was right!
I had a chicken salad-the cheapest thing on the menu since it was the end of our holiday! It was massive and I couldn't finish it and very tasty and filling for a saladm. IJ was friendly and the price was reasonable for Normandy. I would eat here again.

We went on a Saturday night and the place was packed, with tables being 'turned' when vacated. At one point there was a queue of people waiting for tables - even the outside tables were being used. Subsequently service wasn't quick. Good food as usual. Not cheap.

Top class food without pretensions, really popular with the locals so booking ahead is essential to avoid disappointment. Genial hostess who remembered us from last year, keeps the establishment ticking like clockwork. Lots of fois gras and flourishes such as amuse Boucher, petit fours and a fabulous cheese trolley plus a carte du vin which runs to several pages have made sure there is an entry in the Michelin Guide

Worth the stroll to the westerly end of the boardwalk, not 10 minutes from casino and Grand Hotel. Lovely patio overlooking the beach, fine efficient staff. Excellent mussels and frites - and other brasserie fair (bar tapas) even got a taste of the local calvados as a complimentary appertif. Lovely evening. get there right at 7pm or you won't get a seat.
