American tourists sometimes overlook one of the best restaurants in any town in Germany because they can't imagine a city hall with good food. In the US, at best a city hall will have a cafeteria for employees. In Germany, however, city governments pride themselves in having excellent restaurants, usually in the basement (cellar = Keller) of the city hall (Rat-haus). This is very true in Magdeburg. The 300-year old Ratskeller has been beautifully restored and decorated. It is a huge restaurant capable of handling large crowds, but during off hours various sections are tastefully closed off. My wife and I have eaten there several times over the past 14 years and the food and service have been consistently excellent. Our most recent visit was September 14, 2012, and we had a light meal of a salad (which was huge) and a smoked herring with an apple cream sauce and fantastically good bratkartoffeln (fried potatoes). For desert we shared a very large apple strudel with both whipped cream and ice cream. Good beer and wine are available, of course, as this is Germany. The service was very friendly, and the wait staff spoke excellent English, which is not always the case in the former DDR part of Germany. We took advantage of a special late afternoon menu where many of the dishes are "half price plus one Euro." The location, on the market square, is within easy walking distance of the main train station.

I've been there 4 times and everytime I visit I have problems with stuff. They forget my cakes, bring wrong coffee or I have to wait ages before somebody comes along, although the place is almost empty. It is really a shame, because the cakes are fantastic and the cafe is so nice and welcoming. I love old furniture there! It's a possibility to dive into another century for some time.Cakes are also served to take away. There is also a terrace with a nice view to traffic free place with fountain, in summer it's very attractive.

First of all, I am excited to be the first review written in English of this establishment, because many more tourists should go here. When we stepped inside, the restaurant is fully decorated to make you feel as if you are dining in the Parthenon. We were unsure if we were underdressed in a T shirt and jeans, however no one seemed to mind. Servers were very nice to us while they did not speak much English, and gave us a taste of the house liquor (which was quite good) both before and after the meal. I ordered the lamb coulettes (I believe that's what they were called) and my friend the gyros plate. The lamb was cooked to perfection and the sauce with mushrooms paired perfectly. Small appetizers of flatbread and cheese before the meal were also free of charge. I highly recommend this venue to all travelers!! No reservation needed, we attended on a Monday.

Popped in here for a meal before the (very near) Opernhaus. Forgot that Germans smoke everywhere, and the pretty terrace was stunk out with tobacco. Soon forgot that, however, when my fine dunkelbier and food arrived. I had chosen mushrooms stuffed with spinach and gorgonzola, cooked with mozzarella and something which made a delicious sauce. 7.90e. I dont eat veggie that often, but this was a five star winner! My companion had a very tasty schnitzel .. and we bowled off to the theatre highly delighted and prepared to return AFTER the theatre ..Which we did.This time, we sat indoors, with friends from the theatre, but alas! I was too full to try a second dish of scrumptious champignons. But I made sure the others did!A must visit next time in Magdeburg ,,

Nice atmosphere and good selection of beers. However the night that I visited they certainly required more staff. The two waitresses were rushed off their feet.Didn't hang around to try the food, due to the length of time it was taking to get served.Hopefully this was a one off.Hey there,sadly we have to say: WE KNOW! It is close to impossible to find good, professional staff in the restaurant industry right now and we are very sorry that this affected your visit. Our team is doing its best and they are very passionate and motivated about their job. If you give us another chance next time you will see the food is worth the wait! :-)

Walking around town with a large group of friends we were ensured by a waiter we would be well served. And we were. Service was great, food was good and drinks were supplied at a good speed (it was hot so we were all very thirsty :-))Maybe not really original Spanish flavors and possibly adapted to the German taste but all in all a good experience.

Aside from being quite ordinary and nothing of note, the burgers (Caesar Chicken-Burger and Veggie-Burger) were cold. Not the they got cold while being brought to the table from the kitchen cold but.. cold. And there were 4 of them, so it was not a coincidence. The fries were nicely done, warm crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. The desert - a certain cherry-jam, chocolate flakes and syrup on vanilla icecream was delightful. Unfortunately can not recall the name but it was in a separate menu.Thank you so much for taking the time to review your stay. We have to apologize for the burgers. This must have been a mistake and we are really sorry! Glad that you enjoyed the rest of the food and hope to see you around again soon!

We liked everything. From staff who was super nice with our little ones, to the view which was brilliant to the food which was outstanding. We did not expect this when we booked the table. It looked nice and was close to where we stayed. The kids got their special requests which didnât seem to be a prob at all. A great atmosphere inside for a meal and was nice outside for a drink.The waiting staff were friendly and helpful. We only wanted quick bites and they gave us a table that was reserved for an hours time. They were happy for us just to order starters and side dishes. Nice food and attentive staff with good English.Recommended and will go back again if I am in the area.The starter portion sizes were large :-)

The setting of this restaurant is incredible, really special, the whole experience was wonderful, the service, the amount and quality of the food, and nice that you could order local in season produce, the asparagus soup was amazing!I would recommend this restaurant to any one looking for a special place to eat at reasonable prices. A little out of the city but worth the cost of a taxi!
