Where to eat Central European food in Muenster: The Best Restaurants and Bars

May 9, 2020 Alice Mieles

Find out what Central European restaurants to try in Muenster. Often overlooked by English-speaking tourists, Muenster is a small university city near the Dutch border. The Altstadt (old town) was rebuilt after WWII to resemble its medieval predecessor, and you'll find most museums and historic attractions are here. For trendy clubs and restaurants, head over to the Hafen ("harbor") district.

You cannot expect a reasonable priced French restaurant with a 'fresh' attitude anymore in Germany (nor in France) these days, so we knew what to expect. A good start with oysters, fresh and succulent. The bouillabaisee I would rather avoid next time, the soup arrived close to a German starter soup, small with almost no fish. I'd recommended to the put up the price, say 15€ and add a little bit more fish in it. Or offer a small and medium version.Fish and vegetables ok, nothing special. Wine selection is high class, likewise prices, but that is what you expect. Service was excellent although only two tables serviced this mid week evening. For a company paid meal a good choice although privacy could be an issue if only a few tables busy.

Attached to the more pricey and formal Gourmet 1895 in the Kaiserhof hotel (across from the train station), we were pleasantly surprised by the warm and inviting reception we received at Gabriel's. With a diverse menu translated into English, accompanied by several elegant amuse bouches, and excellent service, the dining experience is refined and comfortable. The risotto was cooked to perfection, as was the pea soup. Fish and meat entrees were exceptional and desserts are heavenly -- if there is still room for more. An excellent meal for all!Thank you very much for your feedback and visiting our restaurant Gabriel's. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your dinner very much and hope to see you again soon. I really liked this place. The schnitzel was delicious! The garden was well set out with heaters and blankets too. They had tvs playing the football and it was packed with locals. Fortunately they spoke English too :)I recommend this place to everyone! I paid 13€ for a schnitzel and 2 beers.

Ate at the Grosser Kiepenkerl on a Saturday with a larger group. The service was very friendly and were helpful with specialty requests regarding food on and off the menu. The appetizers came quite fast so that the rather longer wait for the main course was tolerable (all tables were booked, so the kitchen was quite busy). The main course was brought out for all at the same time, which resulted in medium warm side dishes for some of us. However, the service responded professionally and brought out a selection of hot sides for all to share. The more traditional dishes were good, the venison dishes were variable. Overall, the experience was good for service, the food itself was ok, but not superb for my taste.

This place is on a lovely little street of restaurants and beer houses. The atmosphere is very relaxed and friendly. Good, reasonably priced wines can be drunk with your meal, even though it is a brewery. The food is good quality, simple German cooking which we enjoyed. The service is very efficient. Warmly recommended.

One of the "must" places (along with its larger namesake neighbor) you have to eat at to experience Muensterland food and Gemuetlichkeit. Quiet, good food. Pleasant wait-staff. Try the local Altbierbowle (beer with syrup,..you won't know you're drinking beer). The Lachs (salmon) and Kruestchen Bratkartoffeln were great. About 20 euros per person.

We enjoyed our dinner here well enough, but were slightly disappointed by a number of the dishes. The pork was a little dry, and the homemade sausage was not very tasty - the blood sausage especially had a strange texture. However, sauerkraut and bratkartoffeln were both excellent. A good traditional German meal, nice atmosphere and excellent service, but not the greatest food we've had of its type.
