Traveling on the island of Shikoku is special. It's here where we hoped to experience the real Japan outside the big cities of Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. The main problem though is migration: young people that leave, driving in the street you will see almost no one and the people you see are generally speaking old. Here in Kamiyma we hit upon a good looking restaurant on a village street off from the main road. Wonderfull hospitality, good biological French food. Wine and espresso? What's going on here? The owner told us during dinner that a group of people is trying to bring back new life here by creating special places and cooking good food.Talking about the food: we had a wonderful dinner. The prices of the bottles of wine are quite high compared to the prices of the food. The food is not haute cuisine, it's as if you are in a very good provincial local restaurant. The bread is amazing though, everything tastes great. We were here on a Sunday evening and the place was full. If you happen to be in Shikoku and looking for good food, an espresso, or a place to meet nice local people, this is where you should go.

Located just underneath the train station and MUCH better service and tourist information than the official visitors info. The lady in the official one really didnât want to be there and it was very obvious. We walked out with no idea on what to do and it wasnât until we discovered the I-Cafe and the delightful Yayoi that we could get any information. This lady is an absolute delight and a real asset to Takayama - she set us on the right path Really enjoyed the coffee several times! Pop in here when you arrive at the station for sure!
