Reviews on Bar food in Debrecen, Northern Great Plain, Hungary. Debrecen (Hungarian pronunciation: [ˈdɛbrɛt͡sɛn] ( listen)) is Hungary's second largest city after Budapest. It is the regional centre of the Northern Great Plain region and the seat of Hajdú-Bihar county. It was the largest Hungarian city in the 18th century and it is one of the Hungarian people's most important cultural centres. Debrecen was also the capital city of Hungary during the revolution in 1848–1849. During the revolution, the dethronement of the Habsburg dynasty was declared in the Reformed Great Church. The city also served as the capital of Hungary by the end of the World War II in 1944–1945. It is home of the University of Debrecen.

Last year the Obester Hotel's restaurant (previously John Bull's pub) received an extensive remodeling. They re-worked the whole concept and besides the typical restaurant tables put in some comfy couches as well. The outfit now is modern and remained also unique thanks to the huge miniature bottle collection of the owner that decorates the walls in giant glass cabinets. Food is delicious, with an emphasis on healthy ingredients, so even traditional meals receive some healthy touch. Everything listed on the 70-item menu list was available as we were told. Service was fast and courteous, must admit that at the time of our visit the place was almost empty. It is now a fresh new restaurant worth returning.

Okay food but not great. We were especially disappointed by the quality of the daily menu. Although the quality tends to fluctuate. Pastas are overpriced. Since it has a great location and a very cheap daily menu option, I still give it a good rating. The interior design and the terrace is truly unique and pleasant. Staff can be completely cold and inattentive, sometimes even rude. Service is an important factor when visiting a restaurant, unfortunately we left feeling unsatisfied. Then again, other times both the service and the food was good. In conclusion, I don't expect any consistency from this restaurant.

The portions served were humungous and the main course was delicious. Compared to British prices it was an absolute bargain. This was let down by the desserts. Only two of the four of us eating wanted dessert because we were stuffed from the main course and beer. Three desserts were delivered to the table and although huge portions, we found them a bit bland and tasteless. One was a cheesecake, I can't remember the other one. Service was a bit hit and miss possibly due to the language barrier. I'd recommend this restaurant for the main courses but maybe give the dessert menu a miss.

Simplisity to make you remember the past, clean toughness, casual gourmandism, tidy yard, neat bar, in the heart of the city in Simonffy Street. The very unique snack bar in town full of life, full of energy and full of pre-war piquancy.
Maszek has excellent food, fantastic/relaxed ambiance, and a bartender worth her weight in gold and an usually well-stocked bar.Her Amaretto Sour was a new and wonderful take on an old classic. We could smell the fresh orange zest from several feet away. Service was slow but very worth it.

This restaurant has put up advertisements in their women's toilets (!) for a Steak and BJ Day. This is incredibly offensive and distasteful, with a cartoon poster featuring a woman, under the bedsheets, performing the said act on a man who is happily eating a piece of steak. This place is supposedly a family restaurant with high chairs for toddlers! My friends and I are outraged and disgusted, and very disappointed that this formerly reputable restaurant has sunk to this level.

Now, dear reader, some of us like to sample a beer or two on our evenings out. This can (I am told) lead to a desire to eat and be merry. Belga is a perfect location to pursue these ideals. The beer menu is nothing short of remarkable, both in its detail and also the breadth of its selection on tap. It is a teensy bit pricey for Hungary, but as a treat is a worthwhile investment. The staff are lovely, courteous and knowledgable about their fare. There is a charming seating area outside the front of the restaurant in the main plaza, where, as we found there is often live music on a Saturday night. Food wise the menu is excellent with dishes to suit all dietary needs. We started with the Pork ragout soup, then ventured into both local signature dishes. The portion sizes were perfect, not too big, but equally not attempting "Nouvelle Cuisine".Debrecen offers visitors the opportunity to move from venue to venue in a small area, but for those who like to settle and enjoy the cafe culture and ambience, Belga is a tough act to beat.

Nothing special. The best was the nice staff, all other things were average. The worst was that the place strongly smells of food which had an impact on my clothing.
