What to do and see in Zakopane, Southern Poland: The Best Things to do Good for Kids

January 16, 2022 Veronika Gaddis

Just a few miles from the Slovak border in south central Poland, Zakopane is a resort town in the Tatra Mountains, popular with skiers in winter and with hikers and climbers year-round. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Zakopane grew into Poland’s most visible art colony, a hotbed of culture ended by Soviet influence after World War II. Today it harkens back to an earlier time, complete with gorgeous wooden houses. Learn about these buildings and more at the Museum of Zakopane Style.

Ski Zakopane

Dear Future Skiing or Snowboarding Fans, I have been organizing Quick Start (half-day skiing and snowboarding courses for beginners) for a few years. Quick Start is dedicated to people who do not have the time or inclination for several-day ski courses. During the QuickStart course, you will learn how to ski down a small slope, use the ski lift, stop and turn safely. The course price includes three hours of training (in English), equipment rental, ski lifts, refreshments at the restaurant and a transfer from the hotel to the slope and back. We recommend the course for tourists who are planning a day trip from Krakow to Zakopane - we will pick you up from the Zakopane bus station. Detailed information about the Quick Start ski or snowboard course is presented on our website. See you in Zakopane!

We arranged ski equipment hire and private family lessons having read the reviews on TripAdvisor. I must say that from my first email I knew it would be a very positive experience. Paulina was so professional and helpful with our booking. We arrived to the office on the Sunday morning a little later than expected but although they were so busy we were not made to feel uncomfortable. The staff were so enthusiastic. Our ski instructor Jacob (Jake) arrived in his car to meet us and take us to the slopes. Our 2 hour lesson did not start until we had our ski passes bought and we were out on the slopes. Jake was such a fantastic person and we learned more than we have in the past from any instructor. Myself and my husband had skiied a number of years ago pre children but this was our second ski holiday with the kiddies. We found the private family lessons invaluable and great value. Each morning Jake picked us up and we drove to different ski areas. Got to see lots of the surrounding areas during this time too! The last 2 days we brought our own car and followed Jake as we wanted to stay on a bit longer than the 2 hours but of you were finished skiing Jake would drop you back to your accommodation. Now that's service! Jake had brilliant English and gave us much knowledge and information about Zakopane, he was worth his weight in gold. My 8 Yr old daughter cried when we had to say our goodbyes... The return of the ski equipment was a very smooth process and again I can't speak highly enough about the staff at Goski. We would highly recommend them. They are by far the best ski service we have ever used. Thank you Goski for making our holiday in Zakopane!

Strazyska Valley

Reviewed By Robert937 - Rotterdam, The Netherlands

The entrance to this valley is within walking distance from central Zakopane (2.4 km from Krupowki street; 100m up; follow Kasprusie road). A well maintained path, at times more like a small road, leads to the upper part of the valley and takes about 40 minutes. Special about Strazyska is the fact it is a rather narrow valley with a wild stream running through. Not just pine trees, but deciduous trees as well provide a colorful experience. Especially this time of the year (October) when autumn sets in. It is possible to hike out of the valley towards Sarnia Skala 1377 m. (follow a trail with black and white markings towards the east). Add another extra hour to reach the peak.

Myself and 10 others have just spent the week in Zakopane and Matti was our first and only choice of taxi! He was excellent, always on time and very easy to book. We used him so many times over the week and if he wasn’t able to help he arranged someone else to pick us up. He became like our own tour guide, recommending places to eat and things to do, making dinner reservations for us. Excellent service and such a nice guy! Thank you.

We loved the show put on by an old Baca, there is a good interaction going on between the old and the new generation, we thought the presentation was very good, the whole process of coming from sheep milk to Oscypek became living and clear. The old Baca is quite the character, had a good cheer and attitude, the presentation setup is close up, intimate almost, very enjoyable experience. Very good to take kids to.
