What to do and see in Zakopane, Southern Poland: The Best Budget-friendly Things to do

February 21, 2022 Timmy Ribble

Just a few miles from the Slovak border in south central Poland, Zakopane is a resort town in the Tatra Mountains, popular with skiers in winter and with hikers and climbers year-round. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Zakopane grew into Poland’s most visible art colony, a hotbed of culture ended by Soviet influence after World War II. Today it harkens back to an earlier time, complete with gorgeous wooden houses. Learn about these buildings and more at the Museum of Zakopane Style.

We arranged ski equipment hire and private family lessons having read the reviews on TripAdvisor. I must say that from my first email I knew it would be a very positive experience. Paulina was so professional and helpful with our booking. We arrived to the office on the Sunday morning a little later than expected but although they were so busy we were not made to feel uncomfortable. The staff were so enthusiastic. Our ski instructor Jacob (Jake) arrived in his car to meet us and take us to the slopes. Our 2 hour lesson did not start until we had our ski passes bought and we were out on the slopes. Jake was such a fantastic person and we learned more than we have in the past from any instructor. Myself and my husband had skiied a number of years ago pre children but this was our second ski holiday with the kiddies. We found the private family lessons invaluable and great value. Each morning Jake picked us up and we drove to different ski areas. Got to see lots of the surrounding areas during this time too! The last 2 days we brought our own car and followed Jake as we wanted to stay on a bit longer than the 2 hours but of you were finished skiing Jake would drop you back to your accommodation. Now that's service! Jake had brilliant English and gave us much knowledge and information about Zakopane, he was worth his weight in gold. My 8 Yr old daughter cried when we had to say our goodbyes... The return of the ski equipment was a very smooth process and again I can't speak highly enough about the staff at Goski. We would highly recommend them. They are by far the best ski service we have ever used. Thank you Goski for making our holiday in Zakopane!

Strazyska Valley

Reviewed By Robert937 - Rotterdam, The Netherlands

The entrance to this valley is within walking distance from central Zakopane (2.4 km from Krupowki street; 100m up; follow Kasprusie road). A well maintained path, at times more like a small road, leads to the upper part of the valley and takes about 40 minutes. Special about Strazyska is the fact it is a rather narrow valley with a wild stream running through. Not just pine trees, but deciduous trees as well provide a colorful experience. Especially this time of the year (October) when autumn sets in. It is possible to hike out of the valley towards Sarnia Skala 1377 m. (follow a trail with black and white markings towards the east). Add another extra hour to reach the peak.

We loved the show put on by an old Baca, there is a good interaction going on between the old and the new generation, we thought the presentation was very good, the whole process of coming from sheep milk to Oscypek became living and clear. The old Baca is quite the character, had a good cheer and attitude, the presentation setup is close up, intimate almost, very enjoyable experience. Very good to take kids to.

This is an example that cemetery is not always a place of monumental sadness and memories. This is rather a meeting place with history of Zakopane, it's famous personalities, as well as showroom of local sculptors. Each grave is different and you can feel a piece of history behind of all of them.

Sarnia Skala

Reviewed By endrju_74 - Ipswich, United Kingdom

Superb view point towards mainly Giewont mountain, but the view stretches out from the highest peaks of Tatry Zachodnie (Western Tatry) to Polish part of Tatry Wysokie (High Tatry). Also Zakopane and vicinity can be clearly seen. Sarnia Skała is accessible by foot only, it is after all a rock formation in national park. The shortest hike would probably take about 1:30 h, and it would have to start at Dolina Strążyska valley, at it's northern end (car park, toilets, souvenirs, buses to Zakopane, national park toll booths). The top of Sarnia Skała can be reached only in one way, by black trail, which runs northoods form a small pass n the southern side of Sarnia Skała. To get to that pass one can use a longer black trail, called Ścieżka nad Reglami (Path above Regiels - "regiel" is a local word for the small peaks covered in forests at the northern edge of Tatry around Zakopane; the word "regiel" is also used to name the lowest levels of mountane ecosystems) - that trail runs from Dolina Chochołowska in the west to Kuźnice (part of Zakopane), and links all big and small valleys on its course. Sarnia Skała can be conquered both from west (mentioned walk from Dolina Strążyska) or from the east sides, both can be combined with other trails, resulting in many options of walks. Great spot, definitelly worth every bit of sweat lost on the ascend.

Giewont Mountain

Reviewed By luki1231231 - Krakow, Poland

Very nice hike to the top would recommend visiting. The only downside is the waiting line to get to the top. But once you there really worth the hike. Recommend walking all the way up there from kuznice for the full experience. Bring enough water and DON'T go up there if there's bad weather coming.
