Egelsee

Reviewed By TimisoaraMarius - Timisoara

Egelsee is a small lake up in the Mountains, on the west side of Attersee. The easiest access is from Stockwinkl and the starting point is Stadler Gasthof am See. Alternatively, it can be reached from Unterrach or coming from Nussdorf am Attersee on Westwanderweg. Doesn't matter the starting point, it is a pleasant trip through forrests that covers the Mountains that line the West Bank of Attersee. Egelsee itself is located in a quiet location, it is rich in vegetation and if you like small animals and birds, it is an ideal place. The access is not difficult, excepting maybe the ascending path if you choose Stockwinkl as starting point. Very nice place to spent a half a day. Swimming and fishing are not allowed. Take water and food with you. If you come from Kronberg - Wienerroith - Nussdorf you could continue from Egelsee to Stockwinkl or Unterach and get the regular boat cruise. Altogether, it is a nice and relaxing trip (children are welcome!) and remains enough time to take a refreshing bath in the green-blueish water of Attersee.

SchafbergBahn

Take a ride on the steepest cog railway in Austria from St. Wolfgang to the top of the 1,783 m tall Schafberg. In 35 minutes, the SchafbergBahn will carry you to the top. With its striking summit, this is one of Austria’s most beautiful and scenic Mountains, treating visitors to incomparable views of the surrounding natural landscapes.

We viewed the Schafberg Cog Railway at the beginning of the year on a TV Show "Greatest Trains Around the World". As we were going overseas later in the year, I booked a night at the Schafbergspitze Hotel at the top of the mountain, so we would enjoy the WHOLE experience. Words & photos cannot portray it adequately. Revelled in the train trip & in September had great weather - sunny & warm in St Wolfgang where it is situated. Surreal to be at the top taking in the views both during the day, at sunset & at night. We enjoyed the dining experience at night with typical Austrian home style menu [loved the Apple Struedal with Vanilla Custard] & couldn't help going to the window regularly to watch the sunset. Worth the extra money to stay at the hotel without a doubt!

Komponierhaeuschen von Gustav Mahler

Reviewed By MrLoo - Antwerp, Belgium

After picking up the key at the reception of Hotel Foettinger and walking through the busy camping ground - you can find some peace at Mahler's composing hut. When you enter , the 3rd symphony starts , and you can read all the interesting materials on display (mainly related to the 2nd and 3rd)
This composition hut is not a shrine for Mahler (unlike the composition hut of Maiernigg) but surrounded by the beautiful nature you can better understand the 3rd symphony . Mahler fans may enjoy it a lot
After Reading all the exhibits - we sat down on the floor to listen to the whole of the 3rd symphony. Unfortunately, if the sensors don't detect any movement they turn off the music - so we were close to the end of the third movement when the music stopped. When we got up the music started again - again the 3rd symphony from the beginning
And there are some funny details. We had a Gustav Mahler eisbecher after the visit.
... but there is a festival of classical music on the Attersee using Mahler's picture, but they program Strauss waltzes. Poor Gustav
Thank you to the Hotel for preserving Mahler Composition hut

Visited the town of Mondsee on a tour for The Sound of Music and saw the Basilica during this time. The building extremely beautiful with its bright yellow exterior. Saw it in the midst of the snow which made it even more exciting. Even for those who are not religious, this site holds great historical significance and is bound to be loved by all Sound of Music fans or those who are interested in different kinds of architecture. Would definitely recommend if you fit any of these categories. The inside is also very spacious and has nice statues and ornaments.

An extra star if the gondolas were a little more modern. However, that aside, the trip is fantastic with the alps and lakes opening up before you as you climb ever higher. A little expensive at around €46 for 2 but well worth it and something that should be on the list if you’re in this area.

As a gin fan I had to visit this place: besides their local heroes (Zirbenschnapps, Poire Williams, etc) they also produce their own Gin, 3 of them were given Gold Medals at « World-Spirits Award ». The boutique and service were very nice and you can taste the different gins.

Fuschlsee Rundweg

Reviewed By Mazandrew433 - London, United Kingdom

This is a very enjoyable circuit of a beautiful lake and we'll worth doing as a half day activity. The path is clearly signposted all the way around with a an indicative duration of 3 hours although depending on your level of fitness can be walked in a much shorter time. The path has a good surface and can be walked in light shoes if the weather has been dry, although hiking boots are probably best for the lightly wooded areas. Most of the walk is along flat or gently undulating ground with only a few sections with short slightly steeper ground, so is suitable for children. There are also nice cafes where you can break for refreshments in Fuschl, and on the wàterside near the other end of the lake (ie almost equidistant on the circuit). During most of the walk there are many lovely views of this beautiful lake and the surrounding hills and Mountains.

Edelkastanienwald und Waldlehrpfad

Reviewed By Anton E - Lenzing, Austria

Pfarrkirche St. Wolfgang (Pilgrimage Church Of St. Wolfgang)

Reviewed By Roman T - Vienna, Austria

It doesn’t matter if you are an expert in architecture and history or not. Entering this church shows you a rather good way to combine gothic and baroque architecture. The building itself is a pure gothic church building also showing some criteria of an initial Romanic building. But windows and arches are built in a pure gothic way. Especially remarkable is the high altar erected in the late 15th century by Michael Pacher. It is one of the most important late gothic pieces of art.
In addition later built altars like th altar of Thomas Schwanthaler are worth a visit as well as the rebuilt cell of St. Wolfgang visible in a side chapel of the church. Especially on warmer days a visit of this church is a beloved alternative to cool down somehow. The silence and atmosphere of the church invite you to rest.
