Tykocin [tɨˈkɔt͡ɕin] Yiddish: טיקטין, Tiktin) is a small town in north-eastern Poland, with 2,010 inhabitants (2012), located on the Narew river. Tykocin has been situated in the Podlaskie Voivodeship since 1999. Previously, it belonged to Białystok Voivodeship (1975-1998). It is one of the oldest settlements in the region.

The 400-year-old Synagogue in the small town of Tykocin is one of the few Jewish houses of prayer that has managed to stay standing in Poland, despite the depredations of time, pogroms, Nazis, and post-war Communists. Partially restored in the 1970s and turned into a museum, it is a beautiful small early baroque building with high arches, tall columns and traditional verses and images on the walls. It is a sad jolt to learn that during WWII, the town's entire Jewish population, about 8,000 people, was herded into the town's market place, then marched out into the nearby forest and shot en masse into large pits they had been made to dig themselves expressly for that purpose. The empty Synagogue, today being respectfully looked after by non-Jewish caretakers -- the day we were there workmen on scaffolding were tending to the wall of the Torah ark -- is a silent, moving testament to that horrific end to hundreds of years of Jewish life in this little town.

Who knew there was so much interesting history in this place?! I come from nearby and never knew about this place or its history. The castle is a reconstruction and privately owned. The tour is about half an hour and the tour guide is phenomenal, in my opinion. You'll learn so much! There is also a restaurant so you can spend a nice afternoon there.

First let me say that originally we went into here to escape the cold and try to warm up a bit but once inside it's clear it's worth a visit on its own merit, a lovely building both inside and out, it has a lot of competition in the area with plenty of similar buildings but this one holds it own, pay a visit, you'll really like it

It is number one place to go if you are in Tykocin during late spring to summer time. I bet you haven't seen so many storks in one place ever before, and if you're lucky, you might spot cranes in the filed behind the house (plus lots of other birds, maybe slightly less spectacular). There is lots of space for kids to run around, and owners have horses. It's also a really nice place to stay for 2-3 days, owners run small b&b.

It's a quite big square with a monument of Stefan Czarniecki in the middle - since XVII century the owner of Tykocin. Around the sqare there are unique lovely wooden houses and catholic church of St. Trinity. There is lot of space, it's clean and nice atmosphere of little town.

Pomnik nie jest duży, może nawet trochę przygaszony rozległą przestrzenią rynku, ale prezentuje się świetnie ze wszystkich stron. Ciekawą perspektywę tworzy na tle kościoła św. Trójcy, zachęcając do odwiedzenia tego, ale też i innych zabytków miasteczka. Na cokole widoczne napisy związane z uzyskanymi przez hetmana zaszczytami za zasługi dla ojczyzny. Co ciekawe pomnik wystawił jego prawnuk, któremu najlepiej udawało się z kolei dbanie o własne interesy. Niesamowite, że tak istotny obiekt jako jedyny tego rodzaju w Polsce, przetrwał w oryginale bez większych zmian przez ponad dwa i pół wieku! Chociażby dlatego trzeba go obejrzeć.

Tykocin to wspaniałe miasteczko o pięknej historii i ogromnym potencjale. Warto go odwiedzić chociażby po to by pomóc mu odbudować to co zniszczyła wojna i sowiecka gospodarka.

The museum is a very interesting piece of history but the "Rzym" (Rome) Restaurant is definitely another. Must see it and taste it. truly great reconstruction of what culinary experience must have been several hundred years ago. Great visual reconstruction with really special food!

Muzeum to zwiedza się na tym samym bilecie po zwiedzeniu Synagogi. W mojej ocenie bardziej przedstawia one jednak historie Tykocina (dużą zdjęć i innych pamiątek np.gazet z okresu PRL-u),niż faktycznie kulturę żydowską. Nie wzbudziło mojego zainteresowania i uważam że spokojnie można je sobie odpuścić.

Cmentarz żydowski w Tykocinie zlokalizowany jest kilkaset metrów od synagogi, przy drodze do Kiermus . Jest to jedna z najstarszych nekropolii żydowskich na terenach Rzeczypospolitej, istniejąca od 1522 roku, a więc od czasów sprowadzenia przez Olbrachta Gasztołda Żydów do Tykocina. W okresie międzywojennym na dwu hektarowym terenie było ponad 2000 macew. Niestety w czasie wojny cmentarz został przez Niemców zniszczony a macewy i ogrodzenie użyto do budowy dróg. Po wojnie jako , że teren nie jest ogrodzony nadal niszczeje. Obecnie można zobaczyć kilkadziesiąt macew wyrytych głównie na kamieniach granitowych.
