Bakkie offers plantation museum, restaurant-bar, tropical garden, a trip down Warappa Kreek past an old sugar factory to a unique Surinamese beach, famous for its shifting sands and rare birds. Easily accessible via public boat from Paramaribo, Bakkie is a great day out, weekend of good food and nature or week of intense birdwatching.

An unexpected surprise is this wonderful park that tells you so much about Suriname and the Amazon and not just the butterflies. A guided tour through the jungle and the butterfly breading process, with up-close interaction with live butterflies is just wonderful. The museum is well presented.

Peperpot Nature Forest Foundation manages the natural wealth that arose after the end of the old Peperpot coffee and cocoa plantation in Commewijne. The area of approximately 820 hectares houses a unique ecosystem with a large variety of animals and plants, just 5 kilometers away from Paramaribo. Part of the area has been made accessible as a nature park that will be developed in the coming years with the support of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and other partners into an important destination for nature education and recreation.
We rented bicycle and rode from Paramaribo to the Peperpot Reserve and had a lovely time. Nice, wide road to cycle on and several walking trails. Makes for a very nice outdoor activity.
