Pernambuco (Portuguese pronunciation: [pɛʁnɐ̃ˈbuku]) is a state of Brazil, located in the Northeast region of the country. The state of Pernambuco also includes the archipelago Fernando de Noronha. With an estimated population of 9.2 million people in 2013, it is the seventh most populous state of Brazil, and is the sixth most densely populated and the 19th most extensive among the states and territories of the country. Its capital and largest city, Recife, is one of the most important economic and urban hubs in the country. The Carmelites priests started the construction their church in 1696, being it inaugurated only in 1767. It honors Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the Holy Patroness of Recife. The church was built in the baroque architectural style and is one of the most beautiful churches in Northeastern Brazil. It was totally restored and reinaugurated in 2001, with the enhancement of its great paintings, ceilings, images and gilt carving finishes. Nevertheless, due to the city's high humidity level, it again needs some renovation efforts. As it is downtown, in the Santo Antônio Quarter, check the Basilica opening hours before going and use taxis at all times, principally if you are visiting it alone. Enjoy!
