Okotoks Erratic - The Big Rock

The Big Rock is just outside our town, Okotoks, and we love going for a walk around it. It is an amazing natural attraction, this massive rock left behind when the glacier retreated. The Blackfoot legend about it is extremely interesting too, but you need to come and visit to read about it yourself.

The Saskatoon Berry Farm

This place is quite amazing - good restaurant, good furniture store, good bakery, good farmer's market plus u-pick berries and vegetables. A 40 minutes drive south of Calgary on Highway 2. It is a perfect outing with friends and family for a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, and the Farm opens all year long, every day, 9-5. It is a gem in southern Alberta, you won't be disappointed.

We've bought season passes for this place this year. My two children, 7 and 3 years, have been enjoying the visits. Setup is quite simple, but there are enough activities that young children can enjoy; petting zoo, big slide, bouncy spots, etc. Corn maze has also started from August, which was fun, too. We can easily spend 2 hours or so.

Sheep River Provincial Park

Reviewed By BenLar137 - Calgary, Canada

This is one of the Calgary area's under-appreciated Provincial Parks. From Turner Valley, turn west onto Highway 546. It has a couple of blocks of land, separated by Wildland areas. Those wildland areas can be used by hunters during the hunting season, whereas it's not allowed in the basic provincial parks. Within the Sheep River PP, there's the Sandy McNabb cross-country ski area (but it's plagued by poor snow generally but can be used for hiking summer and winter); the Foran Grade hiking area (very, very popular as an easy hike), the Indian Oils trailhead, with the only bridge on the Sheep River for getting across; a protected area for viewing Rocky Mountain Sheep; and the Blue Rock / Junction Creek area for exploring the western fringe of the park. On our last visit, we used the Indian Oils trailhead area to access the trails going to Green Mountain. There's a good modern pit toilet there, but we didn't see any intact picnic tables. Just a couple of hundred metres from the parking is Sheep River Falls, a cute little waterfall. The even prettier Dyson Creek Waterfalls are about 4 km's further, in the Green Mountain area, and many would just stop at this lovely open space for a great "wild" picnic . None of the trails in the park itself reach great heights, but some are longish walks which still need preparation and fitness. The access road, Highway 546, closes from December 1 to May 14 every year to help the wildlife recover.

Small gallery located inside an old railway station. Nice gift shop carries local artisan products. At the time we toured, a well known Canadian photographer's work was on display which made the visit well worth it. Admission by donation.

We just moved to this area and came across this museum so we went in. It is in one of the old buildings along Main St. We were very impressed with the number of exhibits. It is a great way to learn the history of Okotoks.

I stopped in this summer for the first time in the 15 years I've lived in Okotoks.
Recently had my mother relocate to the area and I was looking for something "Okotoks" to give her to welcome her to town.
While it was explained that there's not a ton of goodies available anymore in town, the girl at the desk spent 10 minutes with me putting together a "welcome to the neighbourhood" package for my mother.
Fantastic, friendly and definitely welcoming!
