What to do and see in Kutaisi, Imereti Region: The Best Shopping

May 11, 2022 Oliva Fomby

Kutaisi (Georgian: ქუთაისი [kʰutʰɑisi]; ancient names: Aea/Aia, Kotais, Kutatisi, Kutaïsi) is the legislative capital of Georgia, and its 3rd most populous city. Situated 221 kilometres (137 miles) west of Tbilisi, on the Rioni River, it is the capital of the western region of Imereti. Historically one of the major cities of Georgia, it served as the capital of the Kingdom of Georgia in the Middle Ages, and later as the capital of the Kingdom of Imereti. The Parliament of Georgia moved to Kutaisi in 2012, in an effort to both acknowledge the status of the city, and to decentralise the Georgian government.

Kutaisi Market

We went here just to have a look. And ended up buying hand crafted wooden spoons, roller pins, chopping boards of walnut for nothing. Nugbari (why didn’t we buy more! It is the walnut grape covered sausage like things hanging here and there). And some good amount of fruits, yeah and some fruity tea as well. Friendly locals and very interesting place and surprisingly clean and well organised.

17 Kvadrati

17 Square is home for various local artists and their works. You can find here cute handmade notebooks, bags and some gifts as a memory from Georgia.

17 Kvadrati sell really nice leathergoods, backpacks, handbags, bum bags and wallets, as well as some shoes and leatherbound books – A nice touch is that they have leather goods in less orthodox colours than just black and brown. They also sell small decorative items, ceramics, and jewelry made by various Georgian designers. Considering that everything is handmade and feels like good quality handwork, their prices are really great too. 17 Kvadrati have shops in both Kutaisi and Tbilisi; I recommend visiting both.
