December 24, 2017 Veronika Gaddis

Kitzeck is the central settlement in the Sausal mountain range in Southern Styria, Austria. It is the highest-altitude wine-growing community in Central Europe. Kitzeck is home to the first wine museum that was established in Styria (1979). Besides wine culture, tourism has become a pillar of the local economy and obviously both are pursued on close combination.

Every year when I visit Steiermark I must visit Ölmüle Kremser to stock up on my Kurbis Kern Oil, or in English Pumpkin Seed Oil. As this oil is dark green for many people only used to pale or gold green olive oil it comes as a shock. The taste is unique and may be described as having a nutty flavour. You can not cook with this unique oil it has various uses from salads to dressing soups and various cold starters. The pressing room is open to the public and seeing how the oil is made is a relatively simple and fascinating process. The oil is not cheap as if you have seen a Pumpkin Seed they are small and flat and only produce a tiny drop of oil so vast quantities are need to make a litre. Run by the friendly Kremser family it is a must visit if you are in this area.

Such a pleasant stay at the Schloss Seggau! Our rooms were in the upper Schloss, "un-renovated", simple but perfectly clean and proper. The view from the superbly maintained Schloss is just breathtaking. Breakfast buffet is great, dinner menu card offers good choice of local food. One waiter at the dinner table was rather uninterested in having us (too tired?). Overall a great experience - to be recommended!

We spent whole afternoon there, with friends. Our 1,5 yo daughter loved it. There is just never-ending fun. Many different tools, toys and activities. The place is vast! Pity you have to pay for parking, but on the other hand, somewhere they have to get the money for repairs, updates etc. So I am glad to pay for it. there is also a small caffe in container. Enough to order coffee, Sandwich, some other fast food too. There is also a lake to swim in, if one prefers. I recommend it to anyone! Lovely time all the time.

Vinofaktur Genussregal Suedsteiermark

Reviewed By weekender28 - Dusseldorf, Germany

This is a wonderful drive through breathtaking woodland, vineyard, Forests ad fields of hay or corn. At the highest point in Kitzeck you are at 400 meters the highest vineyards in Europe. The hills falling down on either side of this drive are dotted with Buchenshanks, rooms and holiday lets to rent. This is a very winding road, not the alps, but another kind of drive. In several places you have fantastic views to all points of the compass. Wonderful authentic food and wine in almost too may places to choose from.
