Baekdamsa Temple

Reviewed By YCHong - Seoul, South Korea

This is one of my favourite place to go when I'm around here. Though sometimes crowded with visitors, the temple itself has so serene an air that I feel my mind is cleared, and has old tradition in regard to the famous buddhist monks in Korea.
They run "Temple stay" program that provides bed(actually "Ondol") and vegetarian meals and helps take part in some buddhist ceremonies for very reasonable price.
The Baekdam Valley, which was named for having more than one hundred ponds and gave this temple the name, Baekdamsa, can be said to be the most beautiful valley in Korea. I recommend you rather walk by feet from Yongdaeri village where the bus stop, along this valley to take better look at this unspeakable colour of water. it takes about 2 hours. but if you have short time budget, you may take local bus.
By the way, this local bus gets in the way of the walking travelors too much and makes them worry about air pollution. I wish that this cement-paved road were turned back to more nature-friendly trail only for pedestrians and trekkers.

We planned our tour to South Korea to see the coloured leaves in fall. That is the season to go there. We were not the only ones. Bus loads of Koreans had the same idea, all dressed in expensive and professional outdoor equipment. We thought all intended for expeditions in the Himalayas. Trekking in that park is very popular, and a visit is worth the detour.

A good hike with fantastic views of beautiful mountain peaks. Take bus 7 or 7-1 to the national park.
Signs are well placed and easy to follow.
Easy hike in summer, don't need any special gear, but steady shoes are a plus, especially if it's been raining.
There are lots of shops selling food at the entrance, so good for after the hike!

Bangtaesan area is very wide and natural Mountains. Still quite a few Koreans know here, so relatively quite and well-preserved place. You can meet a lot of wild flowers and namuls(vegetable) in spring, wide-spread cool streams and mountain tops in summer, tranquil alleies of colorful autumn leaves in fall, and white and cold snows in winter. One of the permitted mountain for camping of the top in Korea. Highly recommended!

It was a cold windy day. With wind speed of 5.6m/s, there was a chance that the cable car may stop operation, but we were lucky we made it.
The cable car can accommodate quite a number of passengers. This means that if you are one of the later ones to enter, you may not get a window view. (This was what happened to me, quite disappointing.) The ride was smooth except near the end. Perhaps because of the wind, there was some swaying movements. Not good for people with motion sickness.
The view at the top of the cable car station (with a café and a observatory) was amazing! There is a short hike up a stairway (10min), but in my opinion, the hike was not worth the effort. The views on top were not significantly better than at the cable car station. Besides, I was worried for the safety of my children. The wind was very strong and my youngest was swaying around, on the rocks that had no safety railings. I told him to sit on the rocks instead, while I snapped a few quick pictures and left.

The dam is pretty large but what makes this place so amazing is the scenery all around it. I got at least 20 good shots on my camera. You can walk across the bridge, walk up the hill, get some pictures at the pagoda on the hill and get a bird's eye view of the whole area. Then if you have time, you can take a nice 20-minute inexpensive ferry ride across the dam to a small temple on a peaceful and quiet island. You can take a taxi to the dam but then easily find two or three buses back to downtown Chuncheon or Chuncheon Station. This is totally worth a visit. You have to love Gangwon-do!

Osaek Carbonated Hot Springs

Reviewed By papertowel27 - Duluth, Minnesota

I've visited several natural spas (oncheon/온천) in Korea, and this one is my favorite. I'd say it compares to mid-range Japanese mountain resort onsens in variety and quality. It's also cleaner than any other spa I've visited in Korea, although it could be cleaner. There are two tiers for pricing: the base price allows entries to the baths only, while the higher price allows entry to the baths and a selection of co-ed dry saunas. Note that the carbonated spring itself is actually not hot, but there are several hot baths to warm up in (mugwort bath, hinoki bath, pine needle bath, alkali bath, etc). The spa is connected to the Greenyard Hotel, but anyone can use the spa. You can get here via an approximately 40-minute ride on bus number 1 from Yangyang, which picks up every 60 to 90 minutes across from Yangyang traditional market (among other places).
