Gwangyang Maehwa Village

Reviewed By Fer_Arches_Baldovino - Busan, Busan, South Korea

This place in Gwangyang is indeed beautiful especially during spring. It is famous for “maehwa” flowers. These white flowers bloom ahead of the pink cherry blossoms so, if you are excited and can’t wait for spring time and the pink flowers are still buds, go to this beautiful village. The flowers are literally everywhere as in anywhere you look, you can see them. Try visiting a plantation you can just sit by the grass and be surrounded by them. The trees aren’t that tall, you can really appreciate the flowers closely. As always during maehwa festival, or any other festivals in Korea, expect heavy traffic and many people. If you want to enjoy the flowers and the place try getting there early. Also, the village is not commercialized so better be prepared (food, bathrooms breaks etc.) esp. if you schedule your trip on dates that aren’t festival dates.

We weren"t quite sure beforehand whether we should take the detour through Suncheon while travelling from Seoul to Busan, but were so glad we did it. The park is beautiful and well maintained. We went for sunset and enjoyed great views. Not sure what it's like on weekends, but we went on a thursday and it was not crowded at all. Great place for photography too.

Odongdo

Odongdo is a beautiful island. I recommend taking the cable car from the opposite side to Odongdo because you can see a beautiful view of Odongdo. There is a beautiful colorful bridge that you can see at night. The Gardens are well organized.
I give three stars because after seeing the island by cable car and then seeing the Gardens, there is nothing much to see. Also, you have to wait one hour for the cable car.

Suncheon Bay Garden

Reviewed By liveabroad - Ha Long

As nature lovers, our group thoroughly enjoyed our all day visit (W8000 admission.) We spent some time in the formal Gardens (great photo ops!) then took the SkyCube (W8000 fee) to the reed marshes. Birdwatchers in the group were excited to see a flock of hooded cranes, little egret, gray heron, Daurian redstart, brown-eared bulbul, Eurasian magpie, bullheaded shrike, Eurasian nuthatch, parrotbill, Chinese grosbeak, common pochard and Eastern spot-bill duck. Gardeners loved the bonsai chrysanthemum display, the Dutch garden, the greenhouse and the rock garden. We walked over 12,000 steps so biking may be the way to go. We visited on a weekday and it wasn't busy. I think we were the only nonKoreans there. Several cafes are inside the garden with limited menu plus snacks. Suncheon area is friendly to tourists but have few English speaking taxidrivers, hotel staff, etc.

Aqua Planet Yeosu

I love nature and so zoos, sanctuaries and Aquariums are some favorite places. This is the best one I've been to - a wide variety of underwater life, displayed to great effect.
The layout - a central Rotunda with themed exhibits opening off it, allows you to structure your visit. The information brochure is very detailed and a great guide to seeing what you'd like to see.
The beluga show was amazing.
I must say I'm not really that much into sculptures being used to create an atmosphere, such as in the riverine exhibit, but all in all this was a very worthwhilte visit, especially as it was raining heavily and the rest of the Expo site was not accesible in such weather.

Suncheon Open Film Set

Reviewed By Fer_Arches_Baldovino - Busan, Busan, South Korea

On top of the many reasons why people travel to South Korea is to visit the drama set / film location of their favorite Korean series or movies.
Unfortunately, one may really have to travel to so many places, as a result, so much money will have to be spent and too much precious travel time (as in commute/transportation) it will consume for they are situated in different location.
In Suncheon Drama Film set, the quote “two birds in one stone” applies. Actually, more than two birds. It is home to many of Korea’s popular series or movies. Running Man, East of Eden, Sunny, Baker King/King of Baking, Gangnam Blues or Gangnam 1970 to name a few.
This is actually a major flashback to old Korea during the 1950’s up to the 1990’s. To complete your flashback, the studio lets you rent clothes (school, military uniforms and stuff). Perfect for your photo op and completes your Korean movie experience.
You are now a Hallyu Star. Enjoy!

The best way to go up is by cab, because the path up is quite steep and not very friendly. The view of Yeosu city and the Bridges are really beautiful when they are lighted up, so be sure to go at night. Breeze is really nice at the top and it is a nice place to just chill with some friends.

Yudang Park

Reviewed By Nigel G - Singapore

I visited this park as it was located next to my hotel.
Most of the signage in the park is in Korean, so I'm afraid I couldn't understand much about the cultural aspects of the park. It had two nice sitting areas in the middle of the lake, accessed via the bridge. There are a couple of teahouses in traditional style which are quite colourful.
A nice place to have a relaxing afternoon. Easy to sit down and watch the world go by. There are two monuments in the park, which I am not familiar with. There are also 12 old tombstones.

All in all a very relaxing afternoon.

Yeosu Jinnamgwan

Reviewed By Alex W - Singapore, Singapore

There's a gate, an empty pavilion and some low walls. And that's everything. There is a small museum tucked underneath. Besides being small, the displays have a jingoistic tone, all because it was a temporary base for an admiral who managed to see off a Japanese invasion centuries ago. As for "views of Yeosu", the pavilion is on a mound, not even a hill, and isn't high enough to see much. Frankly, I'd say don't bother.
Free admission -- it had better be, since there's virtually nothing.
