Bottom Bay

Reviewed By CindyAnn37 - Somerset

During our stay in Barbados we very much wanted to visit Bottom Bay. We had been there once before, 22 years ago, and at the time we were struck by its beauty; and so we wanted to revisit it on this trip.
I remember it was difficult to find 22 years ago. That hasn’t changed.
I seem to remember on our previous visit that there was no path down to the beach, but there is now. The beach was almost deserted; there were at most eight people there. The combination of blue sky, turquoise sea, white breakers, and golden sand made for amazing photos. The waves were very rough, and I would not recommend swimming in the sea, but there were two local children playing in the waves and being bowled over by them.
We were glad that we had taken the time to re-find and visit Bottom Bay.

Crane Beach

Eighty-foot cliffs overlook this beach, making it one of the most beautiful Beaches on the island.

The day we visit this beach it was not over crowed and we found the beach relaxing and fun to explore. You don't have to park at the hotel. Just after the hotel entrance there is a parking lot that leads you down to the beach. To get to Crane Beach just walk right on the rock path to it.

Harrismith Beach

Reviewed By Richard j

Perhaps less well known, and idyllic, than the neighbouring Bottom Bay, Harrismith Beach is likewise a beautiful stretch of white sand below a wall of coral cliffs.
You descend to the seaside from the shadows of an abandoned, but likely once stately house, to find stunningly varied shades of blue and aquamarine, breakers crashing onto the shore, and pulling dangerously with undercurrents out to the Atlantic. It is not a great beach for swimming, although we did see an intrepid couple wading into the waters, it is exceedingly peaceful, and exceptionally beautiful!

Bodie rocks. He is easy to get a hold of to book a lesson, he comes prepared and gives detailed on land instructions in an informative and entertaining manner before heading into the water. He even brings Surfing shirts and lends them out to protect against sunburn/rashes from the board. I’d definitely recommend taking lessons with him. The GoPros that he attaches to the board are a nice touch and allow you to post pics and videos of yourself to social media to impress all your friends of your new found Surfing skills :) Freights Bay, where the lessons take place is beautiful and it’s fun to hang out with the turtles while you’re waiting to catch a wave.

Hunte's Gardens

You might hear this garden before you see it; its delightfully eccentric owner,Anthony Hunte BCH, plays classical music throughtout the garden. this is the working end of old Castle Grant plantation, where sugar cane was once processed into syrup. Step through the gate and you'll soon tread on the old weigh bridge, where loads of cane were tallied. Just past the old stone outbuildings, where statues lurk among exotic plants, you'll find yourself on the lip of a great, hemispherical sinkhole in the limestone substrate. Steps lead down and paths branch out through an exquisite profusion of flowering plants, with towering trees around the edges. Both here and farther along the top are a series of small secret Gardens, where you can sit to absorb the serenity and enjoy a picnic. Be sure to climb the upper level steps to Mr. Hunte's house, a transformation of the old stables. He'll invite you for refreshments-including his legendary rum punch or freshly made lemonade (for sale)-on his glorious, antique studded verandah overlooking the garden. If you're lucky, he'll tell you tales, and you will surely leave with some of your own. If you're driving, follow the red and white signs that read Hunte's Gardens, from all over the island. Or, come by taxi. If you take the local bus from the Fairchild Street Bus Stand in Bridgetown it's #5 Sugar Hill Bus - Bds$2 each way.

A beautiful garden sadly not suitable for buggy’s or wheelchairs or people with walking difficulties as there are a lot of stairs and small winding pathways, but for the rest of us, an inspirational garden, I didn’t have enough time here, I suggest a minimum of 1.5 hours, more if you are keen gardener, lots of shady areas and Seating places if you want or need to take it slower,, I think there was a cafe we didn’t have time to stop,so not sure,

Gun Hill Signal Station

This former British outpost affords spectacular panoramic views of the island.

The location was strategic when constructed and now it is a scenic viewing location. The exhibits and artifacts are sufficient to tell the story of its use to monitor island security. For the time spent, it's a little pricey but I'd do it over.

We were complete novices, in Bridgetown for only a day on a cruise. Barry picked us up at the cruise terminal, ferried us back to the school and then we got set up to go out. Ruben patiently worked with my wife and me on the beach and in the water. Very safety conscious and very interested in figuring out ways for us to succeed. And the whole place emphasizes the importance of having fun and enjoying the experience. Just an excellent experience and we plan to return to finish the challenge of standing up and Surfing.
