Although your road map (and Trip Advisor) might suggest that Burn o' Vat and Muir of Dinnet are two separate places, the fact is that there is one car park at Muir of Dinnet and the Burn o' Vat is one of the walks on offer from there.
The Burn O' Vat walk is very short and will take you to an area where you can glimpse the waterfall through the cleft in the rocks. Many reviewers will tell you that you can then clamber over the rocks to get to the actual waterfall, and while this is true, it depends very much on how nimble and surefooted you are.
The other alternative is to follow the path up the hill to the viewpoint.

Platform 22 is a family run pottery gallery, featuring our own pottery by ceramicist Emma Pattullo and a licenced coffee house in the pretty Deeside village of Torphins. Recently we have become a micro-brewery making small batches of real ales, which are available both in house or buy to enjoy at home later! Every Wednesday from 10am to 2pm in the Platform 22 forecourt we host Torphins Market. Scotland's only weekly outdoor farmers market that runs throughout the year, promoting local business, local produce and local enterprises too. Wherever your journey takes you pull in at Platform 22 and discover the "Heart of Deeside".
What a glorious selection of home baked cakes. My dark chocolate stout cake was a real treat of sweetness, stickiness and - most of all - CHOCOLATINESS! Lovely coffee and friendly staff. Excellent!Thank you, what a lovely review! I'm so pleased you enjoyed the Chocolate Stout cake ~ it's my favorite cake to bake just now and adding the Belhaven Espresso Stout it gives it a wonderful rich flavour! Hope to see you again very soon!

The waterfall is very attractive and is about halfway round a 4.8 mile walk which can be downloaded from the Walkingworld website. It starts close to the village Post Office and quickly takes you up in to wooded countryside overlooking Royal Deeside. The walk is moderately energetic and takes 2-2.5 hours. Kincardine O'Neil is about 45 mins by car from Aberdeen and is situated on the banks of the river Dee.

A characterful café and shop. A fine selection of dishes and sweet treats including a famous lemon cheesecake. The chocolate, rum and orange cake was one of the finest cakes I have eaten. The staff were very friendly and helpful. All our party were well impressed.

Visited the Muir of Dinnet National Nature Reserve with my wife late last Saturday afternoon.
Free parking, an interesting Visitors Centre, toilets, Seating and picnic areas, but most of all four different walks to choose from.
The Burn O' Vat walk is on the same side of the road as the car park and Visitors Centre. We did this walk first and I have reviewed it separately.
The other three walks are accessed from the other side of the road. One can choose from the Loch Kinord Trail which is the longest at 3.7 miles, the Little Ord Trail which is 2.5 miles long, or the Parkin's Moss Trail at 1.9 miles.
Having arrived late afternoon, and already completed The Vat Trail, late afternoon was turning into early evening so we made do with the shortest trail and walked the figure of eight Parkin's Moss route.
This was a nice relaxed and peaceful walk, we met a dog walker and another couple but apart from that we had the place to ourselves to take in and enjoy the beauty of nature. Nothing too strenuous, some fairly gentle slopes and the paths were mainly gravel, narrowing down quite considerably at times, and in places giving way to a sea of purple heather. (this was during our September visit). Part of this walk includes a boardwalk.
To sum up - an all round enjoyable experience. Would definitely recommend The Vat Trail too. We would have liked to have spent longer taking in the other two walks on offer but time was against us on this occasion. If you like peace, quiet, tranquillity and nature then I'm sure you will enjoy your visit here, also, allow yourself plenty of time.

17th-century castle owned by the same family for over 350 years. Open April to September; access is by guided tours only. There are steep spiral stairs to the upper floors. A stunning castle in a wonderful setting, said to be the inspiration for Disney's Castles.
Although the castle was closed when we visited, it is worth noting that the road to the castle is kept open in the close season, as is the car park, so I assume that they get visitors to do the woodland walks etc.
We came simply to see the castle, and it really is a truly lovely building. It almost looks too twee to be true, and it is important to realise that Craigievar, one of Scotland's best preserved Castles, is the real deal and was originally built as a genuine fortification.
