Leslie’s was recommended to us by friends who live locally. From the outside, it doesn’t appear much. But on the inside, the fresh pastries, fresh salads and drinks were amazing. This is definitely a hidden gem and full of locals. It’s attached to a bakery where the bread is a bargain, baked fresh and often. I can’t count how many times I’ve been here but there’s a reason I go every other day!

It must be one of the worst experiences I’ve had at any restaurant. From beginning to end, nothing went right, except for the salads to start. The outside temperature was about 36C, we arrived to a restaurant where (although they have it) the air conditioning was turned off. Also most of the ceiling fans, until we complained. It was stiflingly hot. The owner himself took our order, quite easy (1 RARE steak, 2 medium RARE steaks and one medium WELL Veal steak) Not one of the orders arrived as requested. The only RARE thing was the Veal, meant to be medium WELL. The wine selected rand out after the first bottle, we should have been told this was the only bottle and we would have selected something else. The desert (Avocado Ice Cream….was actually Avocado cut into pieces and frozen with some cream around it….not Ice Cream. This was graciously taken off the bill in the end. All I can say is think again before you go there for dinner.

Our bus driver dropped us off originally for a Thai dinner which is across the road but we couldn't resist taking a look at the Lookouts menu and was sold on their Santo beef T-bone and grilled lobster. The host was wonderful with explaining the generous menu written in French and prices were reasonable. Service was fast and efficient. We went at night but am aiming to go again for lunch to experience the view.

The French cuisine is quite extensive and a real treat given the remote locality. The host is a true enterprising, handsome Frenchman with a beautiful wife to match. Both are professional photographers and can provide you with a great knowledge of the local areas and island of Espirito Santo. A must stop and wonderful Coffee and teas. It was good to step back in time to when food didn't have to be rushed and restaurants were not cramped and noisy. Others mention the quirky decor of this restaurant but it was a refreshing change from the greys and browns so fashionable today.Of course, this wasn't local in the Pacific island sense but with the French influence in these islands it deserves its place. The owner did his rounds and reflected on doing the same thing for 47 years and still enjoying it. A life well spent. Our entrees were the excellent onion soup; a French classic, and another, the snails. A bit small and occasionally difficult to extract but good.Mains were the Lobster Thermidor which consisted of three half lobsters, a good plateful. I am not sure that as much flesh had gone back in as came out but it was tasty and satisfying. Our other main was the Fruit Bat. The best fruit bat us a dead fruit bat and despite the warnings about its gamey flavour this was excellent my flavoured. It was more full of small bones than a Grimsby herring so I was raised it was not my dish.We were too full for dessert but with everything washed down by an excellent St. Emilio it was a very satisfying evening.
