Vegaoyan-The Vega Archipelago

Reviewed By WinR - Wehl, Netherlands

Not a lot of people knows that Vega is a Unesco Heritage Site since 2004 due to the unique relationship between the islanders and the eider ducks (!). A small museum at Nes on the north coast of Vega shows and explains this extraordinary relationship which protects the migrating eider ducks and in return earns the people valuable down.
Vega is quite popular and has therefore a lot of accommodation. Besides the eider ducks, popular activities in Vega is hiking, on the beautiful Beaches and also climbing the mountain. A nice hike is along the the western shore, opposite to the dominant Sola island. Very nice sunset spot!

E-huset Aerfuglmuseum

A must when visiting Vega, situated in the port of The Vega Archipelago World Heritage: A small, charming information centre telling about the unique tradition of tending the eider ducks. Feel the softness of the exclusive eider down, hear the moving stories about the people who have cared for the birds in centuries. We offer personal storytelling!

This museum was a great experience for those who are interested in the harmonious relationships between the eider duck and humans. It highlighted the caring and kindness of those looking after the welfare of the ducks. Of course this is a commercial Enterprise, but it showed that trust can exist between different species. The ducks come back each year to their adopted family, as do the next generation.

Vega World Heritage Area

The Vega Archipelago was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage status in 2004. The Islands gained this status mostly because of the unique interaction between the eider duck and the island population during the nesting season. To this day the locals protect the nesting birds against all dangers and in return get the precious eider down as a trading commodity when the birds leave their nests. The eider harvesting has been an important industry run by women and the inscription on the World Heritage list can also be interpreted as a tribute to their efforts

We were welcomed by very warm hosting people. The interpretation centre and museum are amazing, the explanation they give and the content are great. Its a lovely small town with beautiful nature surroundings, and of course the tastier waffles with brown cheese. Its a UNESCO site, and a great place to learn about eider ducks and the sustainable production of the most warm clothes in the world. Its a must do for sure!

Nasjonal Turistveg Helgelandskysten

Reviewed By Adele H - Copenhagen, Denmark

This is one of the 18 National Norwegian Scenic Routes that stretches 433 kilometres and requires you to take 6 Ferries on the West coast of Norway. Along the route there is splendid nature, charming villages, the Island "kingdom" of Vega, and lots to see. If you want to drive this route plan at least for it to take 3 - 4 days, maybe even longer. I did it in 3 and including Vega it was long days to cover everything.

Trollvasstinden

Reviewed By HildeVega - Vega
