Where to Eat in Copenhagen: The Best Restaurants and Bars

December 12, 2017 Renato Branum

Copenhagen was once a Viking fishing settlement, and you can still find traces of the Norse explorers here. Visit reconstructed villages, the remains of a 1,000-year-old castle, and museums dedicated to the notorious raiders. Copenhagen also features a blend of modern architecture and historical artifacts such as the Round Tower observatory – a wonderful example of 17th-century architecture. Art galleries, narrow streets, canals, parks, and Baroque churches round out the city’s cultural attractions.

Sollerod Kro

Reviewed By Michael U - Las Vegas, Nevada

Located approximately thirty minutes outside of Copenhagen by car, an additional forty for those using a combination of Public Transportation and foot, Søllerød Kro is said by many to be one of Scandinavia’s very best Restaurants, the “White Guide” recently awarding it a top 5 position behind the likes of Michelin 3* Geranium and Maaemo in Oslo.
Described as “French Cuisine” using local ingredients, though recent reports of Chef Brian Mark Hansen’s cooking suggest an increasing element of New Nordic influence, Søllerød Kro is located inside of a 1677 Inn in the middle of a forest, the walk from the bus stop a pleasant one that takes no more than 15 minutes at a steady pace, though most guests during this particular meal appeared to be nearby locals or folks who made the drive from Copenhagen.
Awarded one Michelin Star since 2007 but with a lengthy history, part of that being a Sunday lunch tradition of opening up the space to families and kids of all ages, it was just prior to 11:45am that the first guests arrived at the lengthy white building in Holte, the early moments everything that fine dining should be with “Yes Sir and Yes Ma’am” aplenty and Champagne flowing, though what followed would probably be best described as a few steps above dining at one of the McDonald’s locations with an indoor playground.
For many a special event sort of Restaurant, the menu divided into a bargain Lunch and two Tasting menus, the Søllerød Signatur and Søllerød Inspiration at DKK1795 and 875, respectively, it seemed only appropriate as a first time visitor to place trust in the items on which the restaurant established itself, a Wine list said to be one of the best in all of Europe passed on in favor of one of Alain Milliat’s new Nectars, the pasteurized Cabernet Grape expressive and brisk in a way that pairs well with everything, though obviously a bit sweeter and less complex than serious oenophiles would appreciate.

Listed as an eight course menu, but in reality double that when accounting for several canapés, amuses, palate cleansers and mignardises along the way, it was just before the restaurant started to fill that things got started, a plastic ‘egg’ filled with boiled Potatoes, Summer Truffles and Bread Crumbs rich and creamy while the Asparagus in smoked Cream was a lot like that at AOC the night before, the small morsel of cured Duck around Prune a tasty balance of sweet and salty while the Apple compressed in Lemon Verbena was a refreshing single bite to refresh the palate for flavors to arrive next.
Offering what would turn out to be one of Denmark’s best Bread services at a pace best defined as brisk, a new Roll of either type delivered warm just as soon as the last bite of its predecessor was gone, it was with anything but a French classic that an amuse arrived featuring Watercress Ice Cream and immature Strawberries in a cold soup flavored with Parsley, the “Oscietra Unika En Surprise” that followed described as a Søllerød Kro ‘signature’ but in reality quite similar to something anyone who has dined at Joel Robuchon has experienced with a thin layer of sustainable Caviar stacked on Asparagus Gel and diced Razor Clams alongside a Horseradish Crisp.
Following up Caviar with more Caviar, the grilled Oyster topped in salty black Eggs specially produced for the Restaurant seemingly an odd decision to reuse a flavor profile so early on, course three was unfortunately a case of unnecessary ‘modernism’ creeping into the dining room, the nitrogen frozen Horseradish liberally added to a disc of Scallops topped in both Ginger and Grapefuit presenting a flavor so bitter and cutting that Hansen may as well have been serving Ground Chuck beneath it because no one would have noticed the difference.
Returning all but one bite of the dish to the kitchen, not one question or mention of it from the staff aside from “all finished?,” it was finally here that flavors got more interesting, the Lobster Tail served beneath softened Cabbage and Curry Foam infused with Thai Basil fairly spicy by Danish standards and yet another case of Chef Robuchon’s influence while the Foie Gras Torchon was a pleasant yet standard preparation putting the creamy quarter-hockey puck beneath Kumquat Jam and Dark Chocolate Crisps.
Clearly a restaurant dependent on using luxury ingredients to wow guests, a bronzed ounce of Turbot seared with Bear’s Garlic served next to a gelatin layer of Black Garlic atop Broad Beans coming next, savories finished with a slightly overcooked Loin of wild-shot Deer marinated in Black Pepper Reduction, the flavorless Summer Truffles served as a shredded cloud atop Cabbage more interesting as a texture than a taste beneath foamy Hollandaise.
Cleansing the palate with a warm cup of Lemon-Ginger Tea and a Macaron of complimentary flavor, a harmless little duo that arrived around 14h30 as several Danish children had long since been chasing up and down the aisles unrestrained by oblivious parents, Dessert one again took a post-noma turn by presenting halved-Cherries atop an Almond Caked next to a quenelle of fresh Woodruff Ice Cream, 2/3 of the Mignardises again featuring ingredients served no more than two courses prior while the Mango Popsicle intended to be dipped in White Chocolate was a fairly clumsy presentation that really did not seem to fit the meal’s concept.

This was by far our favourite meal whilst visiting Copenhagen. Go for the full 5 tasting courses with paired wine, you won’t be disappointed! Every course was delicious and what really made it special was the service. Our waiter was wonderful, very passionate and knowledgable and even gave us a big hug as we left. This makes it into my top 5 meals of all time! Make sure you book in advance as plenty of people were turned away whilst we were dining! No real surprise that they’re fully booked, everything was so delicious. The veal in particular was incredible, thank you Krebsegaarden!

Stopped her for lunch after getting out of the station and it was perfectly delicious. Had the chicken, avocado, and bacon Sandwich which was awesome. My sister, girlfriend, and her brother all loved their meals. They were very accommodating, friendly, and helpful. The three small tables all have wireless chargers too which was a nice touch, and they were happy to provide answers to any questions we had. Stop here for a quick meal after getting out of the station! Its a must.

This has been the best restaurant experience in Copenhagen.Felt you were very welcome guests.Fantastic wines and really good food to accompany them.We chose the four course menu with accompanying wines. Its possible to have two, three or four courses from the set menu.Tonight we began with charcuterie, followed by green and white asparagus lasagne topped with cod.Absolutely delicious- especially since the lasagna was so thin and silky..A Guinea fowl risotto topped with black truffle followed.Again very moreish.Thinly sliced beef and grilled vegetables followed.Accompaying wines were first class .The restaurant was full - mainly groups and family get togethers. At times there were waits between courses but we didn't mind.It gave us longer to chat and enjoy the evening.Nice not to have a time constraint on the table.
The restaurant is easily reached on the 6A bus from the central station.

The Red Box

Welcome at The Red Box, a modern asian-french fusion restaurant in the heart of Copenhagen with a fashionable situation and a very warm and smiling atmosphere and service. The menus are based on a healty edition of the classic french bistro cuisine with a twist of South-East Asian spices and vegetables. The concept of The Red Box is similar to the best fusion restaurants in New York or San Francisco, reviewers tell us...Our courses are based on the most fresh vegetables, seafood, fish and meat at the market - some of them even organic - and we also are happy to serve you a vegetarian meal.

Superb food and service, as well as excellent value for money.
Nice atmosphere, also attentive and forthcoming waiters throughout the meal.
We started off with two nice appertizers on the house, followed by the "Five from China" for starters, recommended by our host. Reading a review complaining about this starter being flat and uninteresting can only be down to extremely bad luck or paralyzed taste buds. It was the perfect start, with a truly nice variation of flavours, texture and tastes. The mussels topped the five dishes off accompanied by a perfect sauce of lime, ginger, honey and orange.
Next off we had fish of the day, and beef tenderloin with black pepper sauce for mains. Both perfect in taste and texture, and the tenderloin cooked just right for a medium rare.
For desserts we had "From the red box", three different desserts: ice cream with licorice and salt flakes, chocolate cake and ginger creme brulee. The perfect finale to our meal.
Not least, the waiter recommended superb wine pairing for the meal.
This was by far the best meal on our Copenhagen visit. Strongly recommended!

Geranium

Having progressively won the Bocuse d'Or over the years (from Bronze to Silver and finally Gold), this showcases a progressive Chef who constantly questions and pushes the boundaries of Danish gastronomy. A little far from the city center, it is in an office-like building. The space is amazing with an open kitchen displaying Chefs plating the food. Perhaps a little too friendly service (when they start asking you what you do for work, it gets a little invasive), they often forgot our table with our wine or even the cheque. The food was different; a little too progressive to a point that you would miss the lamb if you didn't know it was really the main course. However as the only 3 star restaurant in Geranium, it is worth the detour. If anything, it is about the experience.

Marv & Ben

We live in a cosy apartment in two floors on the cobbled street Snaregade – one of the oldest streets in Copenhagen, close to the canals. Here, we invite you for Nordic gastronomy, made entirely from scratch and with a true curiosity for new taste experiences and textures. Everything is made from local produce from small-scale producers, and our wine list offers a versatile selection of interesting wines that we ourselves love – biodynamic, organic and conventional wines, as well as natural wine a single glas or full bottle. The previous owner Frederik Hvidt, who has managed the restaurant for 10 years and achieved a Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand six years in a row has sold the restaurant to a couple of young and passionated guys who are proud to carry on Marv & Ben, and do it with great respect for Frederik and his team. We look forward to seeing you. David Andersen og Johan Burich-Holck

After spending the past few months, literally eating my way through Copenhagen at what some people would consider the best restaurants in the world, I feel most compelled to write this particular review...
Firstly, I look forward to Marv og Ben's first Michelin star (perhaps I can just add a little placeholder star right here * ... there you go!). I can't wait to celebrate that, hopefully with an excellent glass of Ruinart in hand from the excellent wine selection upstairs.
Secondly, I cannot describe a more deserving crew to earn the utmost recognition for their fantastic food and wine, and most notably, their exceptional service that has be baffled every time (although, they may have just topped it last night)!!
Thank you Johan, Mikkel, and wonderful, generous wine specialist ;) for a most impressive show of excellence!

Restaurant Nepali Bhancha

The Authentic Nepalese Restaurant. Serving delicious meals like "Momo's", "DaalBhat" and many more to offer.

Reviewed By Hakan B

The food is just great. I had the Mo:mo chicken dumplings for starters and it was great start. Then I had the grilled chicken, tandoori style, and it was even greater. Nicely spiced and very mellow and tender. With this came nicely fried potato slices, fried veggies and mushrooms and to top it of and lovely spicy tomato chutney.
This was accompanied with lovely beer from the local small brewery Norrebro Brygghus. Tried the Bombay pale ale and the New York lager.
I'll have to rethink my views of Nepalese food. When I was in Nepal some years ago my experience was quite dull and not spicy, but this was something else, tasty and spicy. Just great!
Nice restaurant with great food. Maybe not the most cozy interior, but nice and functional.
