Top 9 Mountains in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan

April 8, 2022 Phylicia Berquist

Just at the northern edge of the Ala Too mountain range lies Kyrgyzstan's lively northern capital, Bishkek. With numerous green spaces, parks and gardens alongside Soviet-era buildings and monuments, the city retains its former Soviet Asian flavor. The city is home to many monuments and cultural institutions, including the National Historical Museum and Ala Too Square, where the changing of the guard takes place daily. The Dordoy Bazaar provides ample shopping, especially for Chinese exports.

Great place for a picnic, or just spend some time soaking in the mountain views. We hiked to the waterfall and spent the afternoon enjoying the fresh mountain air.

Konorchek Canyons

One of the best winter trips I have ever taken. As a single female traveler always traveling solo, I was apprehensive about a snowy winter hike up a canyon. My tour guide was simply amazing. Mars was everything I could have asked for to feel secure & adventurous. First though, I have to say, my flight to Bishkek was diverted to Almaty due to snow & ice weather so I thought I would forfeit my tour. After speaking with Mars, he assured me that as I was the only participant for the day, he would await my flight. I arrived in Bishkek, 3 hours later and he was waiting. It was an exciting drive in the snow to the Canyon and a great hike up & back. He had a surprise tea on the peak overlooking the canyon, as well as brief stops at an excellent local eatery where I sampled delicious local meal & tea. I would highly recommend this tour with him.

Boom Gorge

The road has been fully renovated and is very smooth. Drive is enjoyable with huge mountains on both sides. Many roadside cafes are available for dining. There is Konorchek Canyon near the Red bridge. 2 km of a walk from the road. If you are adventurous enough you may take rafting in Boom river, which get big and bit terrifying in summer. Overall its good stop for food and taking rest if your travelling to Issyk Kul or Naryn from Bishkek.
