Reviews on Central European food in Ptuj, Styria Region, Slovenia. Ptuj (pronounced [ˈptuːi̯] ( listen); German: Pettau; Latin: Poetovium/Poetovio) is a town in northeastern Slovenia that is the seat of the Municipality of Ptuj. Ptuj, the oldest recorded city in Slovenia, has been inhabited since the late Stone Age and developed from a Roman military fort. Ptuj was located at a strategically important crossing of the Drava River, along a prehistoric trade route between the Baltic Sea and the Adriatic. Traditionally the area was part of the Styria region and became part of the Austria-Hungarian Empire. In the early 20th century the majority of the residents were of German extraction, but today the population is largely Slovenes. Residents of Ptuj are known as Ptujčani.

Unfortunately, i can't rate the restaurant with 5 stars. The food was very good, but the waitress who served us was very arrogant. She also did not know how to answer food questions (my son is allergic to certain foods) and also did not know how to help with wine choosing. The waiter who brought us food on the table was very friendly, he repaired the impression of the restaurant and it was a pity we didn't have him as our waiter. So, if you happen to visit this restaurant, I suggest you ask for a waiter who wears glasses, because he knows a lot of food an wine.

Had a late lunch here and overall liked it. Shared starter of warm polenta with cheese and mushroom sauce, a common local dish which was nice and then had calamari (quite nice) and a chicken over bulgar which was also good. Service was nice, fast and very friendly (and fine in English). It's located right at the bottom of one entrance to the castle towards the end of one of THE main streets in town. Ptuj is an extremely quaint town with a good energy. Definitely worth a visit.

Highly unusually located in the suburbian individual housing area. Yet offering a nice view of the Ptuj 12th century castle. A relatively newly built house, very neutral in appearance and conceived for a serious number of guests. Too serious as it turned out. A rather large terrace fine for the summer months. Three dining rooms, two essentially for groups up to 25. All rather boring and oldfashioned, the cheap eighties style. Sufficiently large restrooms. The new lady tennant (owner?) changed both the name of the restaurant and its cuisine completely. Risky, very risky, as Ptuj proves to be the exact opposite of gourmet clientelle, so majority of guests must come from elsewhere. One guy alone is currently handling the service, both bar and tables. Considering just a few guests on a Friday evening, this is sadly quite logical. But he is good at it, friendly, helpful and efficient. Koudos. Wine list – none. The usual story in a huge number of aspiring Slovenian restaurants, in 2019 still. You need to take a walk to the fridge by the bar and check its contents, not knowing at all price markups. Shame!!! Anyhow, they offer several likeable Styrian wines, even the occasional Primorska one – all Slovenia, of course. No printed menu, either – you get a recital of what the daily offer is and make your choice of dishes, as in every classical cheap country inn. Now, lady owner&chef is creative, classical dishes come in a surprising way, with a lot of lovely and vivid decoration as well as several unexpected side tastes. Cute. I recommend tuna tartare. Also very nice desserts. However, I can not praise the use of same decoration and same sides with different dishes served simultaneously. Due to the low number of guests, my red trout was defreezed, though very well prepared. 13 out of 20 on my scale is thus more than enough. Finally and again, I just felt sad that my lady and myself were basically the only Friday dinner guests in the large restaurant. Truly good prices, good service, good food, where is everybody???

We visited this restaurant with whole family. For starter we chose onion soup was delicious. Main course dishes included turkey, chicken, some kind of fish (don't remember if it was salt-water one), and salads. My wife wasn't entirely happy with it but what I got was very tasty.

Gostilna pri Ovinku

Someone once said that life was a long winding road, but we also know that life without turns would be quite boring. The inn "pri Ovinku" (at a turn) is situated at the outskirts of Ptuj and is definitely worth a detour, for it has quite some pleasant exp

Spent my afternoon there for an anneversary and the lunches they serve are out of this world. Starter, soup, main course, salad and desert for an absolute bargain. Also one of the best beer battered turkey I have ever tasted. Cooked to perfection and so tender it almost broke apart on my fork. Go ahead and order anything, there is no way that you will be disappointed! Highly recommended!
