Family owned and operated since 1998, Huong Lan is where Islanders go to experience authentic Vietnamese cuisine on Vancouver Island.
We have never ate in, we always pick up & take home. We have NEVER had a bad meal - enjoy more than Chinese - fresher tasting. We get #28 - but instead of grilled pork patty we sub with grilled chicken pieces. Donât know why this isnât on the menu .. we were introduced to it at Vietnamese rest. In Calgary - just glad H.L. makes it for us. The staff behind counter & cash are great - Keep on doing the great job you do, one day weâll eat in ;)

There is a lot to like about this place, surprisingly hidden in the depths of a strip mall. The staff is absolutely superb as they are extremely professional, proper, and attentive. The restaurant itself is fairly elegant and well kept. The food is very good indeed as it is fresh and well prepared, but I found the pho lacking on a couple of important aspects. First of all, the large bowl is about the size of the regular bowl in other places (I'm looking at you Pho Boi), and the texture of the beef ball is a bit offputting to my Western palate. I am not disputing that it's original and authentic, but I found it hard to swallow.

My wife and I decided to try a different Vietnamese restaurant in Nanaimo and discovered this little gem. Prices were reasonable with generous portions. I had ban xeo (Vietnamese crepe with vegetables, shrimp, and pork) and my wife had a bowl of pho. The ban xeo was excellent with a generous portion of lettuce and cilantro to wrap the pieces od crepe on. My wife said the broth flavour was good, but wasn't hot enough. I also noted that our pot of green tea was luke warm. Would have given a five star rating, but we're pleased with the food. Will be back again.
