Semarang is a central Java city with plenty of character, including haunted buildings, great architecture and excellent local food. One place all the natives have on their must-go list is Kueh Moaci. The store is filled with all kinds of local treats and delicacies, not the least of which is the signature kueh (cake), but the highlight of a stop here is the lumpia. Lumpia is the Indonesian version of what Americans call "egg roll", but lumpia is nothing like its bland Western cousin.Part of what is so unique about this place is that the lumpia are made right in front of you, to order, and cooked for immediate consumption or, like a great many Indonesians do, packed up raw and taken home. My wife never fails to buy 3 or 4 dozen to take back as oleh-oleh (souvenirs).A thin shell of rice dough is stuffed with bean sprouts, shrimp, rice, and a variety of secret spices and whatnots. There are typically a couple of women sitting next to the cart rolling the lumpia, while the boss deep-fries them to a delicate golden brown.Lumpia are eaten alone or with one of a couple of sauces. My favorite is the sweet-sour (nothing like the US version) and I like them spiced up quite a bit with optional chilies (cabe rawit). They are also great with sweet soy sauce and some baby red onions.Kueh Moaci is not really a restaurant, it's what is known as a kaki lima (street stall), with the larger store next to it for your shopping pleasure. The cakes and many varieties of peanut snacks are all worth a try and are unique to central Java. There are many reasons to come to Semarang, but you would regret it if you missed out on Kueh Moaci's outstanding lumpia.
