For diners who may be skeptical about eating in their hotel and who may want to explore Middelburg, this restaurant has excellent dishes served in a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere by charming staff and with a very extensive wine list. What more would you want after an arduous day on the beach. If you book ahead, try to get one of the booths by the window. Our stay included Saturday, when they have a buffet, yet we still chose to eat from the main menu as we preferred the choice of dishes and we were very satisfied. Prices are comparable to good restaurants in town too - no price hikes for captive audience.

Middelburg is flush with good restaurants and bars - but on a cool, sunny afternoon, after a walking tour of the city, we chose to relax inside this inviting eatery on the Old Town Square. Their menu looked appetizing, the prices were competitive. Though there were a few outside tables, the wind convinced us to seek a table within along the front window. Mussels were still in season, so we requested one kettle to share, it came with fries so we added two local Beers to wash the meal down. The mussels and fries were delivered to our table pipping hot. We began dividing the bounty with our hands and a large serving spoon. One order was more than sufficient. After a relaxing meal and conversation we felt renewed. Sated, we sipped the last of our beer and asked for the check. Huifkar was a brilliant way to cap our visit to Middelburg.

The food used to be really good at this place. Since the menu looked similar I ordered a "12-uurtje" which was soup, salmon salad and a shrimp croquet (regional food). The salad came straight from a jar and was basically a pink potato salad and you only got about 3 spoons of sour chicken soup. The croquet was the best thing of the plate but you had nothing to eat it with and 10 euros is way too high for a meal I would not even pay 2 euros for. It seems they do not want to waste a single cent on preparing the food for there customers whereas the goals of the restaurant is actually to cook and create a meal. The service is still reasonable, so if you want to go for a drink then it is still a nice place. I would however not go back ever again to eat there.
