This national Park exceeded my expectations. Beautiful sand dunes with amazing lagoons. We got daily tours arranged by Pe n'areia ecoturismo, and a couple of days were with guides from Vale dos lençois. This park is very unique, jaw-dropping!

Azul is the most visited lagoon, while Bonita is being more visited now. Bonita itself is incredible, but the group of lagoons that you see while in the top of the Bonita circuit is amazing. Don't miss the sunset over the dunes!!

The name comes from its plateaus, that resembles the shape of stone tables (in Portuguese Mesas means tables, hence the name), mainly concentrated in the cities of Carolina and Riachão. Its plateaus are due to the fragile sandstone walls formed millions of years ago, which were eroded by the action of winds and rains. This ecological sanctuary brings countless natural spectacles, unique examples of the Brazilian biomes. Undoubtedly, waterfalls and their natural swimming pools of crystalline water, with mild temperatures around 22° C (72° F) in the midst of the immense rocky walls, are mainly responsible for the charm that surrounds Chapada das Mesas. This is a beautiful church in the historic center of São Luis. The altar is decorated in gold leaf, done in the baroque style. It is close to the Governor’s mansion (also known as Palácio dos Leões, which is also definitely worth a visit); you really don’t need more than 10 minutes to see the inside & take a few photos, so if you are anywhere nearby, it’s worth your time.
