Top 10 Things to do in Marina South, Singapore

June 6, 2021 Marlin Saiz

The Singapore cityscape looks like it was ripped from the pages of a science fiction comic book. If you’re hungry for a true Singapore experience, sample the myriad street foods or take a cultural cooking class. The Botanic Gardens and the Gardens By the Bay offer a slice of horticultural heaven, and the observation deck of the Sands SkyPark makes you feel like you’re high above the clouds. The banks and walkways along the Singapore River bustle with local activity.

Gardens by the Bay

An integral part of Singapore's "City in a Garden" vision, Gardens by the Bay spans a total of 101 hectares of prime land at the heart of Singapore's new downtown - Marina Bay. Comprising three waterfront gardens - Bay South, Bay East and Bay Central - Gardens by the Bay will be a showcase of horticulture and garden artistry that will bring the world of plants to Singapore and present Singapore to the World.

We spent a fantastic day at the Gardens by the Bay. The gardens are amazing and offer so much variety. The highlights were definitely the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest Dome and they are definitely worth the entrance fees to see amazing diversity of plants, beautiful garden designs and creative sculptures and structures - especially the carved wood models of dragons, eagles, horses etc. The only slight disappointment for us was the additional charged display called Floral Fantasy. This was a timed entry display where you had to book for an hourly slot and was $20 per person. It literally took us less than 10 minutes to walk around the display - so it was poor value compared to the combined $28 for the much more impressive Flower Dome and Cloud Forest Domes.

Cloud Forest

It felt like being transported to a new world the moment we stepped into the entrance to Cloud Forest. We were greeted by a huge waterfall and imposing structure. Truly beautiful and breath-taking! Make sure you take your time to explore all levels of the cloud forest. Definitely worth it. It provides easily accessible pathways, and the walk can be at a moderate pace to enjoy the surroundings. One can see the flora and fauna of a forest without having to exert the physical exhaustion of climbing a mountain to see the different plants and foliage that exists at different levels of the forest, and the pleasant air-conditioning makes the visit very comfortable.

Supertree Grove

Reviewed By jacquitohc - Auckland Central, New Zealand

Gardens by the Bay Supertrees: gigantic, colossal towering steel trees. Ascend some trees, view panoramic 360-degree expanse picking out the various attactions. OCBC aerial skyway is a steel-mesh, elevated walkway from tree to tree, very cool, suspended 22 metres up, high above the crowds. I have gait/walking challenges (stroke), all sightseeing has to be well-researched and not overly taxing; I wear a legbrace. It was hot when we were there, bring hats, water, wear comfy shoes. Views: are the impressive Marina Bay Sands hotel, Singapore Flyer, many different domes of the Gardens. Music (Garden Rhapsody) and Light show at dusk each night, check the show times. Too many sights to do in GBTB; we picked 2 or 3, as we only had a short stopover. Train, bus, taxi, various ways to get there. Well worth it.

Flower Dome

Step into the Flower Dome and you'll be standing in awe of nature. Spectacular and innovative in design, it is one of the icons of Bay South Garden. The Flower Dome replicates the cool-dry climate of Mediterranean regions like South Africa, California and parts of Spain and Italy. Home to a collection of plants from deserts all over the world, it showcases the adaptations of plants to arid environments. Stop and smell the flowers in the colourful changing displays of the Flower Field, which reflects different seasons, festivals and themes.

In short words - "A visual and olfactory treat!" Stepping into the flower dome from a blazing sun, you are already treated with air conditioned environment that allows you to immediately relax and are greeted with various scents coming from different flowers. Although it does not look so big from outside, the flower dome is quite huge inside and contains flowers of all kinds. We were lucky to be visiting at the time when a Tulip festival was going on (Till May 20th 2019) and we had a sneak peak into the Kukenhoff festival from Netherlands with a mock Windmill in the flower dome! All kinds of flowers are on display and the flower dome is also a photographer's paradise. A Quick walk would need about 30 minutes (assuming you are here to see the flowers and not just walk), but plan to spend at least 1 hour and keep additional 30 minutes if you are a photo freak!

River Hongbao

River Hongbao is one event during every Chinese Lunar New Year that Singaporeans and tourists really look forward to. The River Hongbao is usually held at The Float at Marina Bay, overlooking the splendid Marina waterfront area, as well as a panoramic view of Singapore’s skyline. This year, River Hongbao is held at the Gardens by the Bay from 10 Feb 2021 to 20 Feb 2021. The large premises are decorated with auspicious Chinese characters during this period, such as the twelve zodiac animals. In the evening, the whole venue lights up in a beautiful myriad of colours, and visitors will also be able to catch performances by performing troupes or singing groups online. And the best part, admission is free for all. This is a must-see place to be during the Chinese New Year holidays.
