Heimattierpark Greifswald

I regularly visit family in the area and always make the time to visit this zoo. It's very well kept with friendly staff and a great selection of local and international animals.
It's good for a lovely relaxing stroll with the chance to feed the animals and stop off for a coffee in the lovely cafe attached to the zoo.

Lots of boats in different conditions. People were working on fixing or restoring some, but many seemed abandoned. We did not go to the Museum Wharf which might be interesting. Could not learn anything about the boats and why they were important.

We went to this museum to see the permanent collection of paintings. We paid 5 euros each only to find out eventually that all the paintings are in storage. The museum is of little interest if one can't speak German as there are no translations on the exhibits

Wiecker Historische Klappbrucke

We made a walking trip beyond city limits to the mouth of the Ryck River but you can arrive here with a car or even with a public transport (a bus stop is just few steps away). We can guess that this piece of land can be named “Wick” but the postal address of the premises there is still “Greifswald”. A painted white historic drawbridge over the Ryck River can be considered as the main touristic attraction at that location but just after a 5 minute walk you can arrive at the mouth of the Ryck River with a very impressive gate that can be closed to protect that area (together with a levee) against flooding water during heavy storms. It is quite important because there is a plenty of yachts and boats mooring at the river banks – one can call it marina. Just because of the boats willing to go up the river the bridge has to be moveable. We were lucky to see such an action when both halves of the span were raised to let boats to go up the river to Greifswald. A splendid view!

St. Marien

Reviewed By Honisoiquimalypense - Derby, United Kingdom

The church dates back to 1275 as a basilica and by 1335 it had been transformed in to one of the most significant brick churches in the region. Locally it is called "fat Mary" due to its squat appearance. Inside the columns are brick and the roof is painted white with coloured accents. The pulpit is inlaid and dated back to 1578 and is quite impressive. some of the window arches are well decorated too with nice murals/paintings dating back to the 15th centuary. There are also some nice wooden carvings. Of interest is the large painting of a black whale just inside the front door!
I'd not come here just for this but if you are in the town - it is worth visiting.
