Græsted is one of the main towns of the Gribskov municipality in the Danish Region Hovedstaden. The town is in northern Sjælland, just south of Gilleleje, and has a population of 3,573 (1 January 2015). The whole of Græsted Parish had 4769 inhabitants (2004).

At first it doesn´t sound as much fun going to a place with a lot of birds but it is. The birds are beautyful but the most fun is feeding the Australian Lories which is included when you have paid the entrance fee. Every day they have a show presenting their big aras. It is amazing watching these big birds flying free. Apart from birds you can see snakes, turtles, monkeys (also in open air), goats and wallabys. You can bring your own food and drinks.

This is the site of the museum of the Danish sculpturer Rudolph Tegner (1873-1950). Many of his works were considered controversial by the Danish audience and critics at that time. He lived outside Paris from 1926 to his death and was primarily in Denmark during the summer. In Paris he was honoured for his sculpture Heracles and the Hydra (1931). It is exhibited in the quite large concrete museum building from 1937. Outside several of Tegners sculptures are exhibited in the impressive landscape with a very nice seaview to Øresund. It is free to visit the parc.

Fredensborg Palace was built in the beginning of the 18th Century. The image of an Italian country villa was on the drawing board when Frederick IV began construction on his Baroque palace. The king wanted to create a haven where his family life could flourish. This Baroque masterpiece took seven years to complete, and during this time the Gardens were also planted. When Frederick IV died, his son Christian VI pulled down wings of the palace and erected new ones, which he, albeit, generally never made use of. It was only when Christian IX came to the throne that the palace was used for the purpose for which it was built. In the summer months, Christian IX and his queen Louise's 6 children, their children's spouses and 36 grandchildren flocked to Fredensborg Palace. Laughter and the trip-trap of tiny feet echoed in the palace halls, and members of the Danish Royal Family would spend time playing in the Gardens. Ever since those happy days, the Danish Royal Family has been moving into the palace for the summer months, giving the youngest members of the family a trove of carefree childhood memories to treasure. The Royal Couple use the palace for three months in the spring and three months in the autumn. They celebrate weddings, silver wedding anniversaries and birthdays at the palace. Fredensborg also provides a setting for Her Majesty to carry out her official duties. She receives heads of state and ambassadors who submit their credentials to her at the palace. In the summer, Crown Prince Frederick and Crown Princess Mary use the palace as a summer residence. They have their own residential quarters in the Chancellery House. The expansive Baroque palace Gardens are open to the public all year round. The palace and the Private Gardens are open for guided tours from July 1st to August 7th.

This 18th century baroque palace is the queen's summer home. You can view it outside but there are guards barring entry or a closer look.
The Gardens are among Denmark's largest.
If you are in the area then it is worth a short stop, otherwise skip it.

Great marina with good facilities and restaurants. Very busy. Marina quite tight even when bringing in a 34 foot yacht, particularly with cross winds. Would definitely visit again but maybe on a busy weekend arrive in plenty of time to review options.

This historic castle was constructed on three Islands and is surrounded by lake and beautiful Gardens. Frederiksborg Castle has housed The Museum of National History since 1878. A tour through the museum's many beautiful rooms is an encounter with kings, queens, nobles, the bourgeois, events, and epochs, which have all shaped the country's history and development from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. The museum was founded by brewer J.C. Jacobsen, the founder of Carlsberg.

If you are visiting in winter, the castle closes at 3pm. This is due to the lack of daylight. Rooms 1-36 are the best (beginning with the Chapel and ending with the Great Hall. The rooms are lavishly decorated. The castle grounds are impressive and beautiful. Allow an hour to tour the castle. We were rushed through in only 30 minutes because of the early closing time. See the castle first and then tour the grounds. The grounds stay open later. IMPORTANT: You must pay to park here. The parking sign and payment kiosk are not at all obvious. We did not see them upon our arrival and returned to find a 650K/$100 USD ticket on our windshield! The ticket agent sits in the parking lot waiting for tourists not to notice that they have to pay. Don’t forget. It is 20k for 2 hours. Castle Ticket is included on your Copenhagen Card.

We visited the place on a sunny Sunday having browsed the website saying something like 'all roads lead to Esrum'. Arriving by car from the side of the small town, but by arriving at site we saw a sign saying that 'if you want to park drive around to the other side'. OK, fine, but there were room for a few cars just outside the courtyard, so we saved the way around. Please make the parking information available at your homepage. It will make life easier for your visitors. We paid the entrance fee and started our visit inside the old monastery, originally of the cistercienser order. It has in impressive history, but there is actually not so much exhibited. What could have been of genuine value was deposited at the National Gallery in central Copenhagen, but some copies were shown. Maybe the security is not satisfying for valuable exhibits. The museum shop had samples of locally produced honey and various products based on herbs, apparently from the small herbal garden. In the courtyard and behind the monastery different handicraft objects and seeds from the monastery were sold. Other products, mostly organic were also available. In the open area behind the monastery food was for sale from small temporary outlets. There is also a restaurant, Ruds cellar, but at the time of the visit they apparently only had coffee and sweets for sale. The place seems to have a lot of arrangements. I guess it is a good idea to check out when these take place, and visit on the particular days.

This chapel is magnificent. It's unbelievable, and was lucky to escape being demolished by fire, when other parts of the castle were badly burnt in the 1800s. The amount of interior decoration, the beautiful organ, the shields on the walls and those extraordinary paintings make this chapel one of the greatest tourist attractions in Denmark.

I didn't really know what to expect when my mom signed our whole family up for this attraction, but was happily surprised by the size, service, different paths, creativity and safety...
I found it way harder physically than I expected... With 3 different lanes there should be a little challenge for everyone in the family.. It's really nice way to spend couples of hours in the beautiful danish nature ! I think everyone should go there at least one time!

I forbindelse med besøg på Tegners Museum, er det oplagt at kigge forbi Villingerød Kirke, der ligger 800 meter fra museet.
Kirken er ikke en seværdighed der får de overskrifter frem, men den smuk som den ligger hvid og velholdt med den sirlige og pyntelige kirkegård omkring sig i det åbne landskab.
Villingerød Kirke er tegnet af arkitekten Vilhelm Holck (1856 – 1936); selve kirkerummet er enkelt indrettet med farver i grå, hvide, blå og lilla nuancer.
Orglet sidder på den ene sidevæg, og derfor er der blevet plads til et stort vindue i endevæggen modsat alteret, som er med til at give kirken et fint lysindfald.
Altermaleriet, som er fra 1924, er i naturalistisk stil. Det er af Mogens Gad (1887 – 1931) og viser Kristus i samtale med den kananæiske kvinde.
Orglet er bygget i 1981 af orgelbyggeren Niels Ehlert, og er et lille instrument på syv stemmer.
Da vi besøgte kirken blev der øvet på det, og instrumentet virker meget pågående og kraftigt i det ikke så store kirkerum. Men det er jo sikkert bedre, når der er mange mennesker i kirkerummet og akustikken dæmpes.
