Standen

Nestled in the Sussex countryside with views across the High Weald, James and Margaret Beale chose an idyllic location to build their rural retreat. Designed by Philip Webb, Standen is one of the most complete examples of Arts and Crafts workmanship, with Morris & Co. interiors and a story of family life in 1925. Outside, Mrs Beales passion for gardening inspires a major restoration of her 12-acre hillside garden. Each garden room has a distinct character and offers something for every season from spring bulbs to autumn colour. Explore the wider estate with footpaths leading out into the woodlands. Close at 4pm November - January

Tucked away in the Sussex countryside, Standen is always a delight to visit even in winter. The tulips are beginning to appear so it will be worth going back again in the spring.
Home of the Beale family, Standen was built between 1891 and 1894 by Philip Webb, is decorated with William Morris carpets, fabrics and wallpaper and is full of arts and crafts objects and art of the period. Music was wafting through the house as one of the National Trust volunters played the piano during our visit, which made it feel more like visiting a home..
Keeping the arts and crafts spirit alive, additional Exhibitions include 'National Trust Treasures' - portraits of several of the volunteers at Standen by Mary Stone - and ''The Standen Collection' - modern hand-printed fabrics and wallpapers inspired by Standen, designed by Peter Thailes and Rebecca Aird.
There is a cafe in the barn with the good wholesome food.

Top tip: visit the visitors centre first. They have 10 free maps for walks in the Forest and you can then plan your route
Ps ‘Forest’ is from the French ‘Foret’ which means enclosed land for hunting so erroneously now called a forest. It’s really a mix of heathland and woods.
Pps you can discover the meaning of the expression ’Beyond the pale’ at the excellent visitor centre?!
... and it’s all free so what’s not to enjoy

I took a large group (50) to Bullswood and they all had a great time. It is a slickly run establishment and everybody is well briefed, so knew what to expect. They have a variety of games that can be played, which seemed to suit all levels of ability. The marshalls were all very friendly and made us feel welcome.
If I was going to be a little picky - the toilet facilities were very poor. They were located in an old shed and really would benefit from an upgrade.

The Llama Park is situated on the A22 just south of the Wych Cross traffic lights and is set in 33 acres of beautiful land The Park is adjacent to the Ashdown Forest which is in an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty'. The Park is home to an ever-growing variety of animals which today includes llamas, alpacas, reindeer, horses, donkeys, Jacob sheep, Kune Kune pigs, Peafowl and poultry, with more animals on the way. The Llama Park is justly proud of its Tea Room and Coffee Shop where we serve a delicious assortment of cakes, freshly made sandwiches and hot and cold food. The Park's 'Sussex Cream Teas' are legendary with delicious fruit and cheese scones made every day from our closely guarded recipe. The fully licensed restaurant serves a variety of food to cater to all tastes, from home-made soups and pastas, to baked potatoes with a variety of fillings, chips and children's portions of good wholesome food. We also offer daily specials, spit-roasted chickens and roast lunches on Saturdays and Sundays. Our Chef promises even more delicious additions to the menu as his creativity is given full rein. The Llama Park has a very high quality fashion and gift shop specialising in alpaca knitwear, pima cotton and, in the future, hand-made Indian cottons and beaded jewellery. It also has a wide range of toys, gifts and accessories for both young and old. The Park's 33 acres are yours to explore and you can do this on your own or take a guided walk in the grounds with a llama or donkey by taking one of our famous Llama or, new to The Park, Donkey Walks. We have also designed some woodland walks for those who wish to explore our wooded areas and enjoy the beauty and peace to be found in these lovely and secluded shady areas. Picnic areas are set in quiet woods as well as in areas with a glorious view. For the children there is a great playground right next to the main buildings so parents can relax and enjoy a meal and a drink whilst keeping an eye on their little ones at play. For the older, more adventurous children there are some play houses set in a wooded area. There is plenty of free parking in our large car park which can accommodate coaches and has reserved parking for the disabled, motor cycles and bicycles. The Llama Park is happy to tailor make parties, weddings, birthdays, workshops and any other event you may wish to hold in a unique and truly beautiful setting.

This was our second or third visit to the llama park for an hour and a half trek. We had initially booked for a day in December but the weather was so poor that we had to rearrange.
The day we visited was very sunny but also very cold. There were four of us, with three llamas. The girl who took us for the trek was friendly and chatty, taking us on a route that was a mix of wooded areas and open space. You defiantly need to wear walking boots or wellies for this.
The llamas are very friendly and calm. You get to stop for carrot break and photo stops along the way. After the walk you can stay in the park as you like but there is not that much to see.
They’re recently refurbished the inside and it looks very nice, with a busy restaurant and a great gift shop! We will be back next year.

We seem to be here about every two to three weeks even though we live in south-east London. Although we arrived just before 4 on a Sunday afternoon they still had a choice of four gluten free cakes and when they came ice cream was included for the same price and the size of cakes was (as usual) huge. Nowhere else that we have come across provides sizes like this and in many tea rooms you are lucky to get portions half the size. The same goes for items like the pate too.
It was very cosy on a dark winter's afternoon and we were here until closing time at 5. As always thoroughly recommended but wouldn't want it to get too popular as might not get a table.

Comprehensive information on the history of Hever Castle can be found in the guide book and audio tours are available from the Hever Shop, Visitor Centre or castle entrance. We visited the house and garden recently and were very impressed by all aspects of the property. The building itself is a fascinating structure featuring many modifications over the centuries. The contents are an eclectic collection of items relating to the area and its history. The custodian was very enthusiastic and informative and definitely enhanced our visit.
The garden was a wonderful example of 'English Cottage Garden', looking particularly wonderful after an earlier downpour. Well worth the admission fee!
