Darling Brew

Reviewed By KrissyKrull

We stopped off in Darling on a Saturday, it was super hot outside. Pushing 40 degrees! Our barman, Richard, was very enthusiastic and full of information about the beers he served us and regrading info on the actual town of Darling. Awesome place for a big group of people to visit and to have a social. Just wish there were individual beer glasses to buy as mementos. Only available in 6 packs. But overall, great vibe and service.

This experience was just fabulous....we booked a guided tour of the venue and were greeted by two well informed guides both from different tribes, one Khoi the other San...they explained in a quite modest way the heritage of their people as the first people's of South Africa...the centre it self was well done with loads of information to read but for me the tour which lasted an hour on a bumpy Land Rover truck topped it off...we were on our own with them which gave us the opportunity of a much more personalized encounter....and we saw lots of buck including the Bontebok.
There is also a place to eat there as well as a few souvenir options...the ostrich egg shell bracelets make a charming and unusual gift.... You can also stay there but I can't comment on that as we didn't stay there....
Highly recommended...

We stopped off in Darling to visit the small theater & meseum made so well known by Pieter-Dirk Uys & his many "spoofs" & his South African political humor which many from overseas may not appreciate. But then many have heard of Tannie Evita Bezuidenhout. A character he portrays so well. It is easy to find & well worth a visit for a light lunch or a coffee. But, do take your time.

It's a lovely quaint town with this little candy store with a little art gallery attached, I would have loved to try their candys it's a pity it was not Halaal. when I asked if it was Halaal the lady said it was and they where waiting on stickers but I then noted alcoholic flavours and upon questioning this she said oh yes but it evaporates, a little bit of knowledge or a simple I'm not sure would be appreciated :)
It's a lovely stop to see the candy being made and wrapped behind the glass and they sell some tshirts and bags as well

Darling Museum

Reviewed By Don_G_Wright - Vancouver, Canada

This museum provides a very comprehensive history of the European presence in the area and the creation of Darling in the mid-1800s (named by the way, for the governor of Cape Colony at the time, who happened to be born in Nova Scotia and later was governor of Jamaica and Newfoundland). Through old-school arrangements of artifacts, extensive displays of farm tools and equipment, and lots of written explanation, the importance of the area as a supplier of agricultural goods, including dairy products, is aptly described and celebrated. We gain less of a sense of the people who lived here before Europeans displaced them, and little about the impact of Apartheid on the non-white population of Darling who were removed from the community and forced to resettle down the road. It is open limited hours, and not always during posted hours, it took three tries for us to find it open. It is also extremely dusty inside this old town hall and the agricultural barn next door, so be prepared if you have dust allergies!

Ormonde Vineyard

Ormonde Private Cellar is situated on the West Coast of South Africa, where the rugged Darling hills roll and fall along the contours of an ancient granite intrusion. These molten rocks, forced from the earth to 300m above sea level, guard the Atlantic Ocean while banks of fog bless the vineyard with coolness and moisture. Proprietor Theo Basson embraces the legacy left to him by his father Nico Basson and his grandfathers before him. The appreciation for accumulated knowledge and attention to detail are principles Theo vows to when asked about the various accolades Ormonde has been awarded. Ormonde is proud to house in it's stable two Old Mutual trophies, as well as various Platinum, Gold and Double Gold medals over the years to mention but just a few. Wines tasted at the tasting room are exclusively available from the estate and selected restaurants. The serene atmosphere and personal experience at Ormonde promise our guests a memorable experience.

A lovely wine cellar to visit. Great Ondine wine to enjoy. Pity the outside Seating area is so exposed. A pagoda over and a trellis to shield the wind would make the world of difference. Such a pretty farm and right in the middle of Darling. A few platters and you would be sorted. Love the wines. Thx

Buffelsfontein Game & Nature Reserve - Day Tours

Reviewed By mauroger2015 - Somerset West, South Africa

My son and soon to be daughter in law booked to go on a game drive at Buffelsfontein Nature Reserve.
My son arranged with the Ranger Andrew and the receptionist to organize his proposal to marry his girlfriend somewhere on the reserve. The management went all out to make this occasion so special for him.
Andrew decided that the venue should be the Cheetah enclosure and as we stood around waiting for the Ranger to tell us all about these 2 cheetahs my son Quintin went down on his knee and proposed to Janine. The rest of the guests on the vehicle went along with this and cheered and clapped and shed a few tears as it was so romantic.
The receptionist then arrived with a basket with champagne and heart shaped Turkish delight for them. It was so beautiful. We were rewarded too with seeing so many animals in a somewhat dry because of the drought but awesome scenery. We highly recommend this venture. Thanks to the team at Buffelsfontein..
