My husband and I did 3 countryside small group tours led by Roberto - Chianti, Clay Hills, and Val D'Orca and the Etruscans. Each was special and unique in its own way. Roberto has specialized in providing off-the-beaten path tours for over 20 years. He is passionate about Tuscan history, culture, food, and wine and shares all of that, along with his entertaining sense of humor, with his guests. The maximum number of guests for each tour is 8 with Roberto driving everyone in his van. He takes you to places he knows and where the average tourist would otherwise not have an opportunity to visit. We developed such an appreciation for the Etruscan civilization, an extremely advanced civilization predating the Romans. Roberto belongs to an archeological club that has been responsible for uncovering Etruscan tombs and preserving their treasures. As part of one of his tours, you visit a museum run by the club, and on another you visit a tomb. Before our tours with Roberto, my husband and I did not think we had much interest in learning about the Etruscans. That all changed because of Roberto. In addition to visits to small villages and places of historical significance, nearly all of Roberto's tours include visits to and lunches at family run farms/wineries where you learn about the food and wine then feast on homemade cheeses, meats, and pasta, as well as home grown vegetables and wine produced at their wineries. There is no better experience than listening to the family members share their love of the land and the things they produce from it while sitting around a table eating and drinking the fruits of their labor. Most of these farms have been in the families for several generations, and multiple generations continue to live and work on the farm.
Roberto's staff is wonderful to work with through the Reservations process and beyond. They are well organized and happy to answer questions concerning the tours or make recommendations for hotels. They have many contacts throughout Italy and helped us arrange private guides for tours of Siena, Florence, and Rome. We can not emphasize enough how Roberto and his staff enhanced our trip to Italy and our appreciation of Tuscany's culture and people.

The Chianti Sculture Park is a permanent exhibition of contemporary installations and sculptures. Artists from all over the world have created 26 artworks, like a labyrinth, a rainbow, a huge keel, all perfectly integrated in the surrounding wooded area. Along a walking trail of 1 km the visitor is able to enjoy the typical Tuscan landscape and the sculptures at the same time.

A surprising and beautiful park in the countryside of Chianti. There is a large collection of many artists from many countries with large works of the highest quality scattered among the trees and land. Nice walking path for viewing. Not all were particularly pleasing to my taste but overall, most were. The artists are asked to prepare their sculptures after being selected on the basis of a submission. They then may come to the park area to work on their project. Great encouragement and worth an excursion.

The owners of the apt we rented arranged this winery tour/lunch for us. It far exceeded our expectations. The wine tasting with Eleonora was wonderful. She was extremely knowledgeable, very personable and her passion for the fine wine of Dievole was apparent. At a cost of 35 euros it was of extremely good value as it included a 3 course lunch (delicious) with wine and coffee. Also included was the wine tasting of a white, a rose, 3 reds and a desert wine & grappa - all very good. If you are in the area this is not to be missed.

It's a basic looking but very comfy place, literally two steps away from the Antiche Therme. The staff is friendly, we got a two euros discount on our pools daily passes and has Wi-fi too. I'd definitely reccomend it!

The benchmark for recognizing the site of Montaperti’s battle (1260 AD) is a hill, called “Monteapertaccio”, overlooking the plain north of the Arbia river. The site is easily reached from the hamlet of Montaperti, being reported by signs (and is also included in hiking circuits)
The site can be reached by car (the last stretch of road is unpaved); but it is certainly advisable, to increase the charm of the place, stop the car at the restaurant "Le Pietre Vive" and walk the short uphill road leading to the top.
On top there’s a stone pyramid, dating back not at the battle’s age, but at few decades ago, remembering the tragic event.
The battle of Montaperti is in fact one of the bloodiest of those fought in the Middle Ages among the Italian municipalities ("Comuni"). To simplify the tale, the battle is said between Siena and Florence; but in fact it was between the "Guelph" alliance (ie that of the Papacy's supporters) including Florence and many other cities in central Italy, and also Bologna; while the "Ghibelline" alliance (ie that of the Holy Roman Empire’s supporters) had aligned with Siena the city of Pisa, and a few others.
The “Ghibelline” troops turned winners, having forced to flee the enemy, and making a slaughter of them. There is talk of 10,000 deaths among soldiers of Florence and its allies: an enormous figure for those times, if you think that then 40,000 inhabitants was the population of a large European city, like London (but Siena had probably 50,000).
The problem is that we know little of this battle, because a few years later (1269) the Tuscan Ghibellines were defeated, Siena also took over a Guelph government, and any existing document on the battle in the city was destroyed. So the memory of the battle is related to documents stored elsewhere, or to some hints of Dante in his "Divine Comedy" (for example "Inferno", Ch. X: "The slaughter and great carnage that made the Arbia river red colored").
As often happens, of the Battlefields nothing remains, and you have to work by the imagination.
Periodically, however, some re-enactments of the battle take place in the plain below, with actors in clothing and armours of the Middle Ages.

Amazing experience!! We took this 2 hour adventure with my husband and our 2 kids (11 and 8). It was my first time driving a squad, and it is very easy to learn and safe for the kids. Gionata is a great guide,and the landscapes were spectacular! We drove through hills, woods, saw deers, stopped for pictures and reached places that can't be reached by car. The kids loved it! Recommend it 100%. Thanks Gionata for a great time!

Highly recommend this castle! The entry fee also includes wine tasting at their wine room down the road. The views and castle are amazing! There is parking limited parking at the top which is not listed at the parking lot at the bottom. I suggest trying parking at the top especially with small children.
