Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse

Reviewed By YTCHENG - Hong Kong, China

There were many beautiful collection of floats and lanterns inside Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse. The payment of entrance fee inside the inner part of museum was necessary but considered worth the visit. The exhibits were used during festivals and won prices in these occasions. The museum building was red in color by the waterfront and should be easily identified for visit. Recommended.

One of the favorite places we visited while in Aomori. Our guide was informative and educational and didn't give us speculative answers. If there wasn't a clear explanation for things he explained that. Well worth a few hours of your time - especially if you have a good guide.

The Hakkoda Ropeway is the best way to get up to the top. There are hikes near the top. There may or not be a great view depending upon the clouds. We did not have the best view, but did enjoy the short 30 minute hike that we went on and the experience.

Seikan Ferry Memorial Ship Hakkodamaru

Reviewed By YTCHENG - Hong Kong, China

Seikan Ferry Memorial Ship Hakkodamaru was the yellow ship parked by the waterfront of Aomori. Information concerning the past ferry service between Aomori and Hakodate was displayed inside the museum and it was worth to spend time to study in more details about the transportation means between the cities here. The external view of the ship was also very attractive and it was located near to the JR station. We visited the site very early in the morning when the museum was not yet open. Hope to view it next time.

We really liked Aomori Ken - their special dog in his own private kennel. Do not miss Ken as one must exit the museum to see him - up close and personal. Just follow the signs.
The entire visit will likely take 2-3 hours.
Nice helpful staff, too.

There's an IKEA-ish / Scandinavian feel about this place the moment you step in (or is it just me?). Here, you will find all kinds of apple products, from cider to jam and cookies. Of course, apple is synonymous with Aomori, so it's not surprising. What is surprising, though, is how ingenious the wine tasting bar is!!! Located on the second floor, the bar let's you select from a choice of eight different apple wines and ciders. Simply purchase a "tasting card" from the counter at the 2F restaurant, insert the card into the slot at the wine tasting bar, and select the type and amount of apple 'poison' of your choice! For starters, I recommend you try the Kimori Cidre Sweet...

Aomori Asamushi Aquarium

A basic but well done aquarium, its worth the trip to Asamushi which is a short train trip from Aomori. Please note that there is a package ticket you can buy from A Building, which covers the Observatory, a city movie & Aquarium. From Asamushi, its a short walk. The best show is the Dolphin show and the feeding of sea lions. The rest of the display is small. Do note some of the best Onsens are at Asamushi.

Aomori Nebuta Festival

The Nebuta Summer Festival (or Matsuri) that takes place in early August every year in Aomori is quite simply one of the most unforgettable and unique street parades in the world. Local teams work each year to build 24 huge floats using wire frames covered with washi paper that sometimes represent Japanese gods and mythical creatures, but also historical figures and the contemporary actors that play them in Kabuki theatres and on Japanese TV. These intricately crafted sculptures are then lit from the inside with thousands of colourful lights and paraded each night around a 3km loop in the town of Aomori. Thousands of people take a part in carrying the floats, parading with taiko drums, flutes and cymbals, and dancing in traditional costumes chanting Rassera! Rassera! It's breathtaking to watch the vivid, colourful floats weaving at night through the throngs of musicians and dancers and you can find your own spot or reserve Seating to enjoy it all. But that's not all. Anyone, regardless of age or ability, is invited to join in as long as they are wearing the traditional haneto dancing costume (which can be rented for about $30 from shops all over Aomori). Unforgettable!

Was here on the 2nd August with a cruise ship visit and went to see the show. The parade is totally amazing with a lot of fun, energy and dancing. It is loud with all the drum beating but you can hear them singing and the tunes being played by other instruments. The floats are really colourful and intricate in design. If you are fit and able you can enjoy it for free. Between the seats you can sit down on the street and enjoy the performance from the front and enjoy the contact from the performers as they hand out bells and fans.
