July 21, 2017 Dorsey Hagwood

Even if you can't be in Hakodate to see the cherry blossoms in May, you'll fall in love with the sunset views from Mount Hakodate. Surrounded by the ocean, it's no wonder Hakodate is known for fresh seafood. If you're up early, have domburi for breakfast at a restaurant in the Morning Market by Hakodate Station.

Uni Murakami, Hakodate Honten

Reviewed By Rokugatsu - Singapore, Singapore

During my recent trip, I had uni virtually every day.
Was really happy to dine at Uni Murakami. Went there for breakfast only to realize it opens only at 11:30am. Tried my luck at dinner instead. We were very fortunate to get a table when we walked in at 6:15pm. Apparently they accept two dinner seatings - one at 5:30 and another at 7:30. There was one no-show so a table was available but we were told we had to vacate by 7:30, which was fine with us. There is an English menu which made ordering fairly easy. The table had a sign specifying where the uni catch of the day was from. I tried both the creamy orange and red ones. Think I prefer the orange better.

Gotoken Restaurant Yukikawatei

This restaurant immediately caught my eye when we were walking between the Jujigai tram stop and the Motomachi District. First, it seemed to be much larger than the typical Japanese eatery. Second, it showed off a Western rather than an Asian decor, a look that we had not seen in three weeks of traveling throughout Japan. So we decided to return here for lunch.
When we entered at 2:45 p.m., i noted that there were two large dining rooms with customers still eating at about 15 linen-clad tables. An English-speaking waiter came to our table and ensured that we had a menu in English. One look at the offerings and it became obvious that we were in a curry restaurant. Most of the set lunch menus featured curry, a dish that holds no appeal for me. But I found a seafood offering -- salmon and mushrooms prepared meuniere style -- and I ordered that. My husband chose hash beef with brown curry sauce over rice, part of a set that came with soup, salad and a drink.
My dish arrived. beautifully presented and brimmed with other seafood besides salmon, Including big, plump scallops, to which I am severely allergic. Our waiter's vocabulary did not extend to "allergic" so my husband and I decided to exchange dishes. He liked mine and much to my surprise, I liked his immensely. The curry proved to be mild and flavorful and a plate held condiments, such as peanuts, ginger, pickles and spring onions, which I could add as desired.
My experience here served as an important reminder for me to determine all the ingredients in a dish before ordering, because of food sensitivities, and not to assume that what was listed is alI I would get.
Our meals came to Y2,200 (plus tax), which we thought was quite reasonable.

We took away our lunch to have in car on our journey to Sapporo. So we chose their famous Chinese chicken burger without much expectations. It tasted so special and delish. I felt that the burger was carefully prepared, customized with special fresh ingredients. Very different from all the McD, Burger King, Carl Jr, that I had before.

Lucky Pierrot Jujigaiginza

Each Lucky Pierrot has a different decorating theme, and the Jujigaiginza restaurant is all christmas. It can be a bit much to a westerner in February, who is just getting over last Christmas (especially the constant christmas carols!), but it's pretty amazing.
We both had the lucky pierrot burger, which was delicious. I didn't expect the burgers to be this good to be honest. The chips were just okay, might have been nicer if they were hotter.
Worth checking out one of their restaurants if you are near one!

Lucky Peirrot Goryokaku Parkmae
Lucky Pierrot is a fast food restaurant chain in Hakodate. They serve American style burgers, pastries, ice cream and drinks. Very American just like the M restaurants. The restaurant is very popular among the locals. Their most popular item is said to be the Chinese Chicken Burger. Some prefer their Hotate (scallop) Burger. All are specially created. They too have a soda drink that is very carbonated. Their shop front decor is very unique. You wouldn’t miss it.
Just for experience sake, you can come here to have a drink or ice cream and enjoy the ambience and atmosphere of the restaurant after your visit to Goryokaku Tower.

We visited the Yasegawa Yakitori shop which is next to the main Lucky Pierrot joint (How convenient!). You tick your food choice on an order form and stand in line to pay. You can either dine in or take away. You can also buy a selection of drinks and snacks at the back of the shop to go with your Yakitori. Tasty and inexpensive meal. A must-try!
