This facility has explanation with English, and Chinese also Korean, I recommend for foreign guests

Hokkaido Museum of Northern Peoples

Stopped over on our way driving the okhotsk line from Wakkanai to Shiretoko. Was very worthwhile. We had visited a similar museum in Hakodate but this one is much better. The is a very good collection of the material culture of most far Northern Eurasia and North American peoples. Items are presented very well and the layout of the exhibition is very well thought out. Only criticism is a complete lack of mention of the cultural marginalisation of indigenous cultures in all these regions by colonial cultures. Well worth a visit.

A great museum to visit, there's a very interesting video about the winter season around the waters of Abashiri, there are some really cute sea critters in displays to view and the cold room is good too especially when you wave around a wet towel. The views at the top are pretty spectacular too.

Michi-no-Eki Ryuhyokaido Abashiri

Reviewed By Chuzaa - Vancouver, Canada

This roadside station has a wide range of local souvenirs, including seaweeds (dried kelp, mostly for dashi), sweets and interestingly local beer.
The tourist information corner is quite limited.
In the winter months, this becomes the pier for sightseeing boats of drift-ice in the neighbouring sea.
They have a soft-serve ice cream with a shade of blue - this is called "Drift-Ice" soft-serve ice cream. It was good, but priced at JPY350. That's JPY50 more than normal ice cream pricing in Hokkaido.
It has a restaurant on the second floor.

Tentozan Viewing Platform

Reviewed By DLi_hk - Hong Kong, China

Tentozan is a small hill overlooking Abashiri town. was last there back in Oct 2006 when we're heading to Utoro in the Shiretoko peninsula. From there looking eastward, the coastline is stretching all the way to Shiretoko, while on the other side Abashiri-ko and Notoro-ko can be seen. The entire Okhotsk Ryuhyo Museum has been renovated - previously the bldg was in red and now in white with better access facilities.

Okhotsk Chipmunk Park

This is truly a memorable experience, the squirrels are so cute, once you enter after a lengthy lecture of the do's and don'ts you are overwhelmed by the little critters. They're everywhere and then you understand why the long lecture. I couldn't stop laughing at how funny the squirrels are in their attempt to fill their storage sacks in their mouths. My only regret was that we were sightseeing and had mire places to discover and had to leave otherwise we probably would have stayed another hour. Excellent attraction.
