It is a long-established inn in Zao Onsen. The historic building is a time-honored figure. The food was also very delicious. Especially the local beef was delicious. In winter you can enjoy skiing, and from spring to summer you can enjoy tracking and hiking. Of course, you can enjoy the hot springs all season.

Great Hotel, Great Food, Great Onsen

The hotel is conveniently located right across the bus terminal where you arrive from/depart back to Yamagata Station. The staff are lovely & such hospitable host. My winter boots gave way and the hotel staff very kindly offered me wellies to use for my stay there and one of them even tried patching up my boots with glue so that I have something to wear back to Yamagata :)Great breakfast & dinner. We chose the beef shabu shabu for both nights and it was a great choice in cold winter. The other great thing about the hotel? 4 private onsens to choose from for couples/family baths. All rooms are non-smoking rooms but they have a little smoking corner outside the hotel for smokers.

onsen ryokan near the lifts

Reviewed By saikou

They have a man-made "onsen" in addition to the natural sulfur onsen that Zao is known for. The sulfur is quite strong (and also quite hot) so be careful not to stay in too long. Full course dinner and breakfast are both good. We had a western/Japanese room with beds, which are very short but I still slept ok. We went in the fall and taking the ropeway up to the top (or halfway and hiking the rest as we did) is well worth it. From the top it's only a short hike to a viewpoint of Okama (a crater lake), which is a big attraction (usually reached directly by car) and absolutely a must-see.

Superb food, lovely onsen

Reviewed By Sonia W

We stayed 3 nights at this ryokan in a ‘Japanese retro style room’ (room 222). Our room was spacious and warm, and had an ensuite toilet. We were able to rent skis directly from the ryokan cheaply and walk to the ski terminals. The ryokan’s onsen were quite small but beautiful, with the men’s and women’s sides swapping twice per day. The food was particularly good at this ryokan. I don’t like fish or other seafood but I usually end up eating a lot while in Japan. However, the chef at Oomiya provided superb kaiseki dinners and breakfasts without seafood based on my booking request. I really appreciated having a few days off seafood, especially when it was such superb food!

We stayed for 7 nights at Yoshidaya fantastic value for money. All staff were very polite & helpful. The room was spacious & lovely and warm. We enjoyed the inhouse Onsen if we didn't venture out to nearby public ones- great way to relax after a day on the slopes. All the meals we had were delicious. Great recommendations for other places to eat were also given.

Great service with a smile

Reviewed By Sometimestraveller12

We went as a group of 5 to snowboard and the location was perfect, 7 min walk from chairlift 4, they also offer special deals for daily lift passes and nearby rental shop (Best Rental Shop) which was great! Fantastic onsen in the facilities open 24 hours every day (2 public and 3 private was available) was perfect for our aching bodies! The best part were the staff in particular a very cheery waiter who always delivers breakfast and dinner service with a smile! Food was delicious and showcased all the best seasonal local foods. While reception staff were not well rehearsed in english they tried their best to assist us as best as possible. They are slightly short staffed on front desk/in the shop but we were never really rushed for service and a bit of patience meant everyone is happy and you were eventually seen to! Our room was simple japanese style room with futons but very large for 5 people with nice views. We would absolutely come back here it was a very enjoyable stay!

Delicious food and great service.

We spent Christmas at this lovely hotel, and thoroughly enjoyed the evening entertainment and refreshments in the lobby with other guests. We took the half board option and were so delighted with the variety and high quality of generous servings we experienced. We selected the futon beds, perhaps next time we would opt for Western beds, but our room was spacious and well supplied. The on-site onsen were fabulous. We never had a problem accessing the private onsen. The opportunity to be dropped off by the hotel driver was so appreciated when we were lugging ski gear. Highly recommended for a relaxing vacation with beautiful mountain views.

Luxury authentic Japanese hot springs Ryokan.

Reviewed By mikelennon70

Zao Onsen in winter is a Magical Snowboarding and Hot Volcanic springs resort Village & " Kinosato " Ryokan in my opinion a Premier traditional Japanese luxury hot springs resort. Book Japanese style with dinner & breakfast for the total authentic experience. Comfortable and consistently tranquil and ambient atmosphere - there is an appropriate garment for you to wear throughout the hotel which adds a unique experience for westerners which adds a unique value to your stay. The internal hot springs baths are exquisite and sturdy with your every need catered to in a unique essentially Japanese style and not far away outside are public Onsen spread about the entire village. It is a heavenly place in winter if you love that season and will leave you most certainly intrigued to return in spring or autumn. set on the outskirts of the village it is merely a 5 to 10 min walk into the ski village the lifts and Gondolas. The majority of staff speak only Japanese though they do have a English speaking resort Host at reception who can help Maya, assisted and was just a special young Lady in all regards. My advice is this establishment is for refined travelers who can respect the expectations of Japanese culture - if your loud and looking to party and carry on that would not be acceptable behavior here. They don’t want that & you'd look like an idiot. Couples that want to immerse themselves into a memorable and unique traditional Japanese experience after the day on the slopes this is definitely for you !
