Best Japanese hotel!

Reviewed By auran001

From the moment we arrived it was 100% service. The valet parked our car and took our bags to our room without us having to say or do anything. The front office team were very helpful and spoke english very well. We were given a convenient traditional japanese room. We booked the couples private onsen which we enjoyed immensely both were clean and luxurious overlooking the river and nature. Our bedroom was massive! and the tatami floor was so comfortable it was the best sleep we had in japan. We were given complimentary champagne for our honeymoon dinner. The food was all traditional Japanese there were over 8 courses and breakfast was just as interesting. I was very nervous that the hotel might smell of cigarette but it did not! This was the perfect Japanese experience thank you for such wonderful service I would recommend this to everyone.

New Maruya....good...but not that new!

Reviewed By aichii

Chose to stay at this member of the Yukai resort group having taken a bath there last year. From the outside the hotel looks relatively new compared to some of the other Yukai Resort properties and the rooms look out onto the lake over the outdoor swimming pool. The rooms are large with a toilet and small bathroom (shower and sunken bath-tub) but don't look too closely at the fixtures (the carpets are worn, the sinks are relatively old-fashioned, stained and dusty) Having said this the New Maruya has three things going for it: 1. The hot spring baths. There is a large indoor bath and a fair sized outdoor bath. The view from the indoor bath is onto the lake..but unfortunately right now there is some sort of construction going on on the path in front of the men's bath so it's not the most comfortable feeling taking a bath in the day-time as there was a lot of activity outside. 2. The customer service at reception and in the restaurant was excellent. There was heavy snow in this area when I stayed and I was given a pair of wellington boots to use. Also the food offered at the Yukai resort hotels is a good introduction for foreign people looking for a Japanese experience (sushi, tempura, noodles, miso soup etc). Also the staff were all incredibly friendly and provided everything that I asked for.(you will need basic Japanese to stay here...as no one spoke English) 3. The view. This hotel looks out over the lake and some rooms have views of the snowed capped mountains. All in all one of the nicer Yukai Resort properties and the return bus trip from Nagoya costs only 3000 yen (This service is also available from Osaka and Kyoto)

We were warmly welcomed to the hotel and received good service throughout. The room had a lovely view of the river and was very quiet and peaceful. Hot spring was average, but they have an outdoor hot spring which was small but a nice experience. Dinner and breakfast was good, we were very stuffed. Our biggest issue was that the room stunk of cigarette smoke (even though we asked for a non-smoking room) and no air purifier to be seen. It was so bad that the next day after we had checked out and left, our clothes and hair still smelled of smoke. That truly spoiled our stay and we were glad to be out of there after only one night.

Highlight of our Japan trip

Reviewed By Koro

We had a wonderful stay here in August. We were warmly greeted by an English-speaking staff member and shown to our traditional Japanese room, which was absolutely lovely with a river view and peaceful minimalist furniture. I was concerned when I booked because it was a smoking room but there was no smell at all. We reserved the private stone bath and it was an amazing experience. Food and snacks were good and abundant. Futons were made up for us while we were at dinner and we had a great sleep. We only spent one night and it would have been better to have had two to enjoy the room and all the hotel has to offer. The Western breakfast was especially fun with course after course cooked right in front of you with guests seated around a stovetop. The area is within easy reach of Kanazawa and I would highly recommend visiting the temple grounds of Natadera on your way from Kaga to the hotel. We ended up paying around 60 euros for a taxi to take us there and wait for us for an hour, but it was worth it for what was the highlight of a 2 week trip to Japan. There's a nice British guy at the tourist office at the Kaga station that can help you arrange this with a taxi driver. It's not cheap, but when you factor in the cost of a luxurious dinner, breakfast, and private bath (not to mention tea, snacks, yukata rental, all free), it was a good value stay and we really enjoyed ourselves.

A true classic

Reviewed By KI-NRT

We try to visit the Hokuriku region each year during crab season to enjoy what we consider to be the world's best crab - the Japanese Snow Crab. It has different names depending on the exact area that it's caught. In the case of the Kaga area, it's name is "Zuwai-gani," and it's awesome. Having stayed a Hanamurasaki a few years prior, for our return visit to Yamanaka Onsen we decided to give Kayotei a try. We booked the Highashiyama Suite, the top category (non-family) room at the ryokan. Kayotei is a small, family-run classic Japanese ryokan that gives out a wonderful, traditional vibe. For first-timers to the ryokan scene and who are eager to have an authentic ryokan (and onsen) experience, Kayotei definitely fits the bill. It's situated in a secluded location along a beautiful stretch next to a serene river, and the architecture perfectly blends into the natural environment, giving it a wonderful sense of place. In the common areas (including the hallways), there are a variety of antiques which include classic furniture, hand-made pottery and traditional paintings, making one feel that he/she has gone back in time. The Higashiyama Suite was a spacious, Japanese-style room that included a private onsen bath (not open-air, mind you.) It offered a wide balcony with views of the beautiful forest below. The only curious aspect had to do with the furnishings in the mini-room between the balcony and living room. It featured a Victorian-era table and chairs, which seemed fitting only from the standpoint that it seemed old-school - but Japanese it was not. Our room attendant (Ms. Terue) was charming, warm and was there to meet our every need. She was also our server during dinner. Speaking of meals, they were not served in our rooms, but rather in a private room elsewhere in the building. We prefer the comfort and luxury of being able to dine in our ryokan room, but at least all guests are not forced to congregate in an open dining area, which would kind of defeat one aspect of an authentic ryokan stay. Speaking of food, it was terrific. Kayotei serves traditional Kaiseki fare, but given that it was crab season, we were served a heaping helping of Zuwai-gani Snow Crab. Crab sashimi, charcoal-grilled Crab, Crab meat & Crab Tomalley cooked over a hot lava rock, etc. The non-Crab dishes were also superb. The clear soup with Crab paste balls, shaved kelp seaweed, Japanese wild parsley, mushrooms and Yuzu was simply divine. The white miso soup with Crab legs was also a highlight. Overall, while nothing was incredibly innovative or unique, what they offered was done very nicely. It doesn't crack our top 5 most memorable Japanese meals of all time, but we walked away feeling more than satisifed with the experience. Nits to pick are few and far in between, but gun to my head, here are two... 1) While the rooms are not worn and ragged, it's not pristine, either. Some scuff marks here and there, and it just doesn't convey a sense of zen luxury that some other ryokans exhibit. It's good, but not extraordinary. 2) The Crab dishes were very good, but we didn't think it was at the top of the heap. Perhaps we're a little hard on Kayotei, having been spoiled by Nishimuraya Honkan (in Kinosaki Onsen), which we've visited twice and provides - in our experience - the very best crab cuisine that we've every had... two different times. Luxury ryokan travelers in Japan are spoiled for choice. Even with that, on most accounts Kayotei more than holds its own against the very best ryokans in the country.

A nice experience

Came here as a tour group. The room is large with a nice view to the lake. We had the Japanese style room and slept in the tatami. To our surprise, it was quite comfortable and warm. Agree with some comments that the rooms have seen their good days and in need for a refreshment. The doorlock to our room was broken and can only be locked by the deadlock. The public bath is big and not many people using it. The disappointment is that the outdoor bath is very small. On the other hand, the staffs are very welcoming and helpful.

Has seen better days

Reviewed By SingaporeSnow

The location of this ryokan was easy to find, just behind the Japanese confectionery shop selling the local speciality, nya-nya manshou. Our room was next to the Kakusenkei gorge and the sound of the flowing river just next to the room was great. Dinner and breakfast was satisfying and the lady, Sato san, taking care of us was very motherly and friendly. The onsen was good but we didn't sleep well due to difficulty with the temperature control in the room and also very thin futons. We went on a Thursday during sakura season and found that most of the shops were closed. We didn't get to try the handmade soba noodles the area is known for and the street was very quiet. It seems that the area as well as the ryokan has seen better days.
