This restaurant is really off the beaten path. We found it only because of a friend's recommendation.
The rural property is beautifully landscaped and very charming. The drive is also visually stunning.
The restaurant itself is small and cozy , with lots of wood and brick. The owner is quite attentive. We arrived at a good time..one table was leaving and for a bit we were alone. Towards the end of our meal , several other clients arrived , filling up the small space.
Our pasta was delicious. My husband and I agreed that my plate was the superior one , a fuselli with shrimp and porcini mushrooms. Just the amount of heat and earthiness.
Our panna cotta with wild berries was a highlight. It was creamy and lightly spiced. The coffee was freshly brewed and piping hot.
I would be concerned about arriving at a busy time as attending all the clients and cooking all the food could be overwhelming.

Leaving the highway DUTRA in Guaratingueta towards Cunha, you drive 30 miles in a beautiful hill landscape/scenery road which is in very good condition, before turning left into a dirt road in very reasonable shape for a normal car.
After 1.5 mile you arrive to a small and very cozy restaurant, where GNOMO CAIO is waiting for you.
The food is very good (at this time of the year - May - the specialty is the trout) and the place is charming.
For those, traveling between Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, I'd say this one is a must:

We had heard of this restaurant , but had never stopped for a visit. We finally had the opportunity on a quiet Thursday evening. Charming decor , good service and really delicious foid. The trout with shitake mushrooms and the ravioli stuffed with ricotta and walnuts were exquisite. W

Charming Bistrot with 40 places. Besides starters and desserts, we serve trout, filet and pasta dishes, made with local ingredients and products from our own ecological farm. Juces and drinks are also made with self produced fruits. The nice decoration by artist "Gerwin de Koning" changes during the seasons. Always there plays a good back ground music like MPB, jazz or lounge. Our objective is offering tasty and correct food for a honest price. We accept debit and debit cards.

The food was ok but not special. Very small portions also.
The day we went the service took too long but i understood they had shortege of staff just during that day.
Again ok nbut for sure not a 4 or 5 star (at least to my standards...)

Passei no restaurante na volta de Paraty. O local é simples e bem agradável. Ótima vista da estrada. Cardápio com diversas opções e pratos saborosos.
Tivemos apenas um problema, uma vez que em horário de grande movimento havia apenas 1 pessoa atendendo no salão, tornando o atendimento um pouco demorado e com algumas falhas acontecendo.
Além de aceitar apenas cartão de débito. Crédito seria bem vindo.

You cannot ask for more: a picturesque, cozy restaurant located just off the main road to Cunha, with a small number tables so that service is quite personal, and great food!
Coração da Terra (Heart of the land in a free translation) specializes in Shitake and other mushrooms. We tried a pasta with shitake and a risotto with wild rice, shitake and shimeji. Both where perfect. The appetizer - both with mushrooms as the central piece were simply delicious.
Just be warned: the place takes a radical approach to what it offers: no soft drinks, no meat, no wifi - just the superb food. And bring money, cards do not work here.

is that this small, family-owned restaurant cooks the food from scratch. Of course, you wait a little longer, however you can entertain your stomach with delicious appetizers before the main meal comes. The menu offers flavorful, generous portions of simple, right, countryside type culinary dishes, what makes countryside Brazilian food so great. But perhaps another but in no means the least important factor of this great small place is the typical courtesy, in a relaxed environment surrounded by green forest, so you enjoy more than food. To get there, you have to carefully follow the signs in the road leading to Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar, then pull off to the dirt road to get to this small farm. I learned from another customer who owns an upscale restaurant in São Paulo that he´s used to learn from DdR cook on his frequent getaways to the region. Oh, by the way, although fruit juices and beers and soda are available, you can enjoy the spirits flavored with local herbs and fruits at no additional cost.

In the middle of mountain road, it suddenly appears. The restaurant is a part of all-in-one mountain resort and serves healthy, fresh organic food directly coming from their garden in front of the restaurant. Personally I felt a little bit expensive but staff was very nice, too. Worth visiting.

Fresh, well-made, regional food, at a very good price. Located in a nice historical house, at the town center. The service is very friendly. Fruit juices are fresh and delicious. It is a self-service restaurant with many meet and vegetarian dishes. Everything is carefully prepared and presented. Recommended!
