Tumsong Tea Retreat

Wonderful experience at Tumsong Tea Retreat

Reviewed By ananyam183

We visited Tumsong Tea Retreat last month and had a memorable experience. It started with the greeting of the well-behaved, well-groomed staff of the resort with a cup of tea. The ambience was superb. Food was never repeated twice. Excellent cooking. Spic and span maintenance of the property. We have enjoyed a lot and have recommended our friends and acquaintances to visit Tumsong. THANK YOU TO ALL WHO MADE OUR EXPERIENCE A MEMORABLE ONE.

Very bad experience

The reviews we saw and on the basis of which we planned a trip to Monchasha didn’t turn out to be so good for us… Our stay over there makes me feel that all those reviews are cooked up… the pictures of the cottages that you see on their webpage are very old… the hay that were laid on the roofs, probably, have not been changed for ages.. The cottage walls are all bamboo with large gaps in it… specially where the roof meets the wall, it’s a gap through which a standard size animal can get into the room… The menace, at the time, when we visited the place on 24th December was the rats… those big rats were all over on the bamboo frames of the rooms.. the kids got panicked and we had a hard time to make them stay there even for that night… we took a decision to leave the place the next day even though our booking was for two days.. the next morning we realized those rats nibbled through two of the bags that had some food inside… fortunately we had shifted all other bags with foods into our cars the previous night… And when all these were happening we called one Mr Debashis… this person, supposedly, the remote manager, started preaching us about the concept of eco tourism…. And we all have it recorded… the following are few points from him.. 1) We don’t understand what eco tourism is 2) Rats are supposed to be there anyway 3) We need to explain to our children about this ecosystem and ask them not to get scared 4) They don’t use rat poisons not to hamper the ecological balance Our Answer was 1) You need to at least secure the rooms where you are sleeping at night 2) A localite said the pesticides are used regularly. Hence Debashis’s version on the usage of pesticide is wrong. It was somehow not used for some period. 3) This is not a no-profit, environment friendly org kind of thing, hence, you should listen to the visitors if they have any issue and try to resolve it 4) No letter to Mr Debashis would help because it would fall into the deaf ears of his employers, who entrusted him to behave uncourteously with the customers 5) Had it not been winter they would have even said the snakes were also supposed to be there. Anyways, we left the next day… we didn’t get any refund as they took the entire payment (including food bills – 5 days before the trip) upfront. Another surprise that we had the same morning was the drivers’ dormitory. It was very untidy and the toilet beside it was completely soiled and it didn’t have any water supply to it. As per them that is an emergency toilet. Only after we complained they cleaned the toilet and put some buckets of water there. We would never think of visiting this place again, not even in our dreams.

Karmi Farm

Total relaxation

Reviewed By martinSussex

Karmi Farm is about two and a half hours drive from Darjeeling , along a potholed road. However the journey is worth it,for when you get to Karmi you are made very welcome. All you can hear is the birdsong and the hillside is covered in trees The old farmhouse is the nerve centre and accommodation is two rooms beneath the deck, two rooms in a standalone building and a family room over the storeroom which can accommodate 6to8 people.. All the rooms have great views over to Sikkim the other side of the valley The joy of Karmi is that it is off the beaten track with no tourists. You can immerse yourself in the local atmosphere. Andrew will take you on walks to the family temple, or to the ruins of the original house or to the nearest village, Kolbong, where he has set up a clinic which is the nearest medical centre for miles around and is run by Suroj , who has been trained up to offer basic medical needs for the surrounding villagers. The clinic relys on donations to keep going and this is a continuous battle for Andrew to keep the funds coming in. The perfect way to spend a late afternoon is with a cup of tea and a book out on the deck, with the fabulous views. Andrew and Mylie plus their team in the kitchen, cooked us some amazing meals made from organic, home grown ingredients They were also able to accommodate one of our group who is gluten intolerant, with gluten free meals. They would grind millet or other corn on the hand operated mill and produce lovely meals. Karmi is the most amazing place to totally unwind, it's just such a pity that we had to leave!

Two nights at Ramsai Rhino Camp in November 2020

Reviewed By Numerix

It was really a memorable trip for me and my wife (both senior citizens ). We drove down in our Maruti Ignis from Kolkata and spent a few nights at Murti and Hollong before reaching Ramsai Rhino Camp, about 19 kms from Lataguri Railway Station ( good roads). The Camp had seen very few visitors since lockdown and luckily enough, we were the only tourists in the area. The Camp consists of 4 wooden cottages on solid concrete stilts with a kitchen and dining room in the centre. We had booked 1 cottage ( 2 adults per each ) through the WBSFDA website @ Rs 3100 per night inclusive of food and taxes.. The lacation is quite isolated, on the periphery of a Tea Estate and just outside the Ramshai Village. Rhinos and elephants are frequent visitors around and sometimes within the Camp area. But you are very safe in the secure cottages. Although very basic, these rooms are comfortable enough for a few nights with attached western w/c. There are frequent animal visits every night during this season due to inadequate food supply within the forest. 2 rhinos were our visitors the first night, grazing on the swampy area serving as a moat around the Camp. Needless to say, elephants try to raid the villages around, in search of harvested food grains stored there. We heard firecrackers and small bombs being burst late into the night to chase the pachyderms away. Due to space limitations, I have to end here. BASA, The B.A.B.L.I. Guest House

B A S A, or "BABLI SHANTI ALAYA", is the Guest-House within B.A.B.L.I [Bureau for Agro-Based/ Linked Industries].BABLI is a rural-action project in interior Birbhum, near Shantiniketan (13 Kms), under the jurisdiction of Illambazar Police Station, in West Bengal, India. We also have a GUEST-HOUSE - where like-minded people, who want to spend a few days in a rural setting, away from the din of city life, can rent cottages of various types and tariffs. However, we are NOT a 'resort'/'eco-tourism centre' - the whole project is LITERALLY wild and UN-MANICURED. At the project, we explore various unconventional farming methods, aimed at rejuvenating the agriculture of the region and countering the process of rapid urbanisation by trying to support the rural culture and livelihood. Our work also aims at rejuvenating the fast-depleting forest cover of the adjoining areas, and conserving the threatened flora and fauna of the region.

Avoidable if comfort and service are what you desire

Reviewed By Debashis M

Stay in Babli if you are fine with carrying buckets of hot water to your bathroom, staying in a room with cheap curtains and furnishings, sleeping on a hard bed with a brick-hard pillow and have zero expectations of any kind of service. I wish congratulate the management of Babli for their fantastic business model. They have reduced their expenses to bare bones by hiring negligible staff, providing minimal services, using the cheapest of furniture / fittings / furnishings, making the guests print their own receipts, no reception desk, no gatekeeper, etc, etc, but their tariff is comparable to the other more modern and comfortable resorts in the vicinity. And the master-stroke of Babli's business model is their slogan that "We are not a resort". IMHO, their slogan is a very clever all-encompassing excuse for not providing basic comforts and services and taking away the right of guests to complain about anything by retorting "Didn't I warn you before that it is not a resort"!

Selim Hill Tea Estate and Retreat

This is an old Bungalow turned into a 4 Bedroom Resort about 35kms from Siliguri. The nearest city is Kurseong, but the Selim Hill Tea Estate is between Kurseong and Bagdogra. This Resort has not really been open long and it seems that it may not yet been put on your register.

We visited this quaint former tea estate in 2012

Located a short drive away from the town of kurseong. We stayed at this wonderful place for two days.Highlights are: 1.Wonderful view of the plains and the lights of siligur after sunset. 2.Best continental food reminiscent of the fare of the British planters. 3. Peaceful surroundings. 4.Helpful staff. 5. A visit to the tea factory nearby. Mobile connectivity is a bit of a problem but who cares if you are on a holiday. Also I don't think you can use your credit cards once there on the spot. The nearest reliable ATM counters are in Kurseong town. A great weekend getaway.

Overhyped and Overrated!

Reviewed By Ishita2125

It's a okayish restaurant compared to the other ones in the vicinity. The reviews here and on YouTube are quite misleading as the place is overrated and overhyped! We visited this place last week while we were in digha. As we had high expectations, we thought of trying the fish items of chili shrimp and shorshe pabda. The pabda was stale and tasteless, the shrimp was okay as the gravy was too salty. Wouldn't recommend this place at all because the hygiene protocols are completely missing. There are flies and mosquitoes roaming around with no fly/mosquito catcher in sight.
