A former mill town, Bolton has been a production centre for textiles since Flemish weavers settled in the area in the 14th century, introducing a wool and cotton-weaving tradition. The urbanisation and development of the town largely coincided with the introduction of textile manufacture during the Industrial Revolution. Bolton was a 19th-century boomtown, and at its zenith in 1929 its 216 cotton mills and 26 bleaching and dyeing works made it one of the largest and most productive centres of cotton spinning in the world. The British cotton industry declined sharply after the First World War, and by the 1980s cotton manufacture had virtually ceased in Bolton.

We have lived in Breightmet for nearly twenty years but had noticed the place had changed its restaurant side, following friends recently visiting and making a recommend we thought weâd give it a try out. Wow fantastic food, fantastic service and the place is lovely and clean 10/10 worth a visit with air con!! Plus a varied menu x

We have not been to this place for a while and I must say I was impressed. This is no longer a pub that does food but a restaurant where you can also call in for a pint. The place is clean and welcoming. The staff are friendly and helpful. The decor is warm and impressive. The prices are reasonable and the food is excellent and the menu varied. We had one vegan dish and I had a steak which was cooked to my liking and of good quality. There was a hiccup with the bill at the end of the meal but this was soon corrected and did not detract from the overall experience.

Whenever we are in the area we always visit empire, so last night before a trip to the cinema we had another gorgeous meal here! We always opt for the lovely steaks but last night decided to try something different, I had the lasagna and other half had the burger and it didnât disappoint.. food was delicious all freshly cooked homemade! Kids ate from the kids menu and they always clear their plates when we come here, they love it! The staff are great.. so friendly and helpful, nice to see staff with a cheery smile on their faces! Once again a lovely meal, roast dinners where delicious as was the cheese pie, everyone enjoyed the food, the only thing that disappointed was the apple crumble, as it wasnât very sweet and wasnât the usual standard. The staff are friendly and helpful, will definitely be back I. The future

This is a fairly regular haunt for us and we always enjoy our time there. We have eaten there in the past and it is decent enough but we generally just go for drinks.This latest visit was on a cold autumnal evening and we got a lovely table right by the open fire. This creates a lovely atmosphere to enjoy something from the good range of well priced and well kept drinks.The place keeps ticking over but is generally laid-back and relaxing place to spend an hour or so. Thereâs lots of free parking as well.

We ate here with friends as we just wanted a pub meal and a couple of drinks.The pub itself is nice enough and the young waitress was friendly and helpful. Thereâs a really good selection on the menu, particularly as we donât eat meat, there was lots of choice.Itâs such a shame that the chips arenât homemade as this would have made such difference. Overall, the food was ok and both the food and drink was decent value.We would return but a few tweaks would make this place so much better - real chips, nicer wine glasses and more choice of beer and wines. Went to Bobs Smithy today for tea with family, booked a table for 4pm didnât get seated until 4-30 not to worried these things happenThe food was mediocre and the service was extremely slow, 4 of us had starters the children did not.at 6pm the children still hadnât had anything to eat, the roast beef dinner was very nice, my friend had salmon and was very disappointed with the size of the salmon,I had a vegetarian leek and mushroom pie, the pastry was that hard it shattered and the filling dry and burnt not at all goodThe decor was nice and it was cleanSorry wonât be going again Carol RIâm sorry to hear about your recent disappointment at Bobâs.We had an extremely busy service on that day and I do apologise about your wait on food. Ordered food off the 2 course menu...starters garlic mushrooms with garlic sauce and these where ok, Chicken liver pate which was very good full of flavour what let this dish down was that it came with toasted medium white bread! Would of liked something a little crusty!Mains were fish and chips mushy peas which my partner enjoyed particularly the chips he liked, Chilli rice nachos the chilli was ok but no better than what I make at home and a little underseasoned couldn't taste any garlic which is nice in a chilli all in all everything was ok if anything stood out it had to be the pate but unfortunately wouldn't make us return in a hurry. The pub was a little tired and personally we weren't overkeen on the dining area which was more like a cafe.Thank you for taking the time to review us, we take time and care over every single dish we serve and it's always good to hear some feedback from people who don't enjoy it as much as we'd like.We find that the subtle flavours of our pate goes well with sliced bread but anyone is welcome to ask for crusty bread if they prefer.Our chilli is seasoned with paprika, cumin, coriander, cinnamon, oregano, fresh chillies, chilli powder, chipotle and lots of garlic so it is a shame that it wasn't to your taste.
