Top 10 Outdoor Activities in Kinki, Japan

January 18, 2022 Franklyn Hardiman

The Kansai region (関西地方, Kansai-chihō) or the Kinki region (近畿地方, Kinki-chihō) lies in the southern-central region of Japan's main island Honshū. The region includes the prefectures of Mie, Nara, Wakayama, Kyoto, Osaka, Hyōgo and Shiga, sometimes Fukui, Tokushima and Tottori. While the use of the terms "Kansai" and "Kinki" have changed over history, in most modern contexts the use of the two terms is interchangeable. The urban region of Osaka, Kobe, and Kyoto (Keihanshin region) is the second-most populated in Japan after the Greater Tokyo Area.

I have watched the TV news that a baby panda was born last year. When I saw the baby, I have decided to see the panda. My high expectations have not been betrayed. The name of the child panda is “Saihin” She is a girl and so active! So cute! So lovely! You must see her. Now the crazy fever of baby panda boom has been calmed down, you can watch her very well without any clouds on week days. The adult pandas except the mother of “Saihin” was not active, just sleeping. So the timing is now to watch the lovely active child panda!

We visited during the typhoon — water was rough the first few days but the last two days it was so smooth and great for swimming, snorkeling and finding shells. Beautiful, clean, easy feet washing stations and toilets.

It is a 15minutes from Sannomiya. There is an animal and botanical garden at Port Island. In inside park, you can meet up close with cute animals like capybaras. In otuside park, you can experience activities such as riding a camel or feeding penguins. Animals’ performances is very wonderful and bird performances. The exhibition area reproduces the habitat of the animals, and you can see the lively appearance of the animals up close. The all-weather environment allows you to have fun even in rainy days. Please enjoy the extraordinary world healed by animals.

It's a bit far from city, you need to get there via the Portline (a separate train line) that goes along the bay. Then stop at Kei Computer Mae station and it's rights below the station! It looks very tiny in a few greenhouse like houses, but once inside, there are a lot to offer and easily a stay for about 2 hours or more. There are many show times so do plan around the show times and feeding hours. Almost all shows end before 330pm so do reach latest around 12-1pm to catch most shows. There are many animals you can pet, cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, capybaras. Some you can feed, birds, parrots, fishes, sheep, alpaca, seal etc. And many that freely roam around in the different garden/greenhouse sections! There are also food stores and drink with lots of seating in the main area. It's made up of small sections/houses around the main seating area in the middle so not to worry you or your children will get tired and need some rest or food.

Walk from Tenri Station to Sakurai Station. Some people make Miwa station a departure and arrival station. Walk through a variety of landscapes such as shrines, temples, burial mounds, village sites, fields, traditional streets. The altitude is not high, but the view is good. In autumn, local fruits are sold at the roadside, which is about 100 yen. There are toilets, rest areas, signposts everywhere, and they are well maintained. You can also visit Mt. Miwa at the Sai Shrine.
