Recommend driving past Hotel at back of Hintersee, you can park at beginning of trail for Free (! a rarity). A pleasant walk through a forest and along a river with wonderful views of Schärtenspitze and Steinberg mountains. Moss covered bolders and trees, Alpine flowers, mushrooms. We gathered lunch as are knowlegable about them. Also saw some dangerous ones. Various lake side views have easles with copies of paintings from that perspective. About 5 1/2 miles total. Easy walking except for one section, would be do-able for families with children.

I think an important thing to know about getting to the entrance is that it’s a bit of an uphill hike. Not a difficult hike but you just don’t arrive at the entryway via a short walk from the parking area. Prepare to get wet along the way. I didn’t get drenched but I definitely should have worn a raincoat. The trail itself is well kept while in the canyon and tunnels. It can get somewhat crowded but it wasn’t uncomfortable for me. It could be loud due to the roaring water. Once out of the tunnels it was about another 20 uphill minutes to the restaurant at the end of the trail. The restaurant had clean restrooms. The view of the glaciers is amazing. Another import thing to know is the hike to the gondola isn’t easy and somewhat intimidating. My friends and I hiked to it and we saw a lot of inexperienced hikers struggling. If you plan on hiking to Alpspitz ensure you have plenty of water and food.

This was my third visit and I thought I write a review because the place is unique in terms of the diversity of species. The size of the Zoo is 200sqm and there is still enough places to sit down, have a coffee and watch the reptiles to interact with each other. There are other animals, such as amphibians, mammals and a selection of birds. The parrot, Coco is freely hopping on the branches above my head while I am sipping my delicious coffee provided by there for a very reasonable price. The entrance fee is also low, given the value, I get out of a three-hours-visit. I discover new species on each visit! Perhaps because there are so much to see, or some animals happened to be active this time and they are fed in front of my eyes. So if you like animals or you have a family it is the best place in town for entertainment. Strongly recommended!

My son and I were visiting my sister and family at Erlangen. We planned a day-trip to Zugspitze. So, it was my sister, brother-in-law, niece,nephew, my son and me. We were joined by my sister’s friend, her husband and daughter... We took the train from Erlangen to Nürnberg as early as 7am. We then took the train from Nürnberg to München and changed to another train from München to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. After that, we took the cogwheel train from Zugspitzbahnhof to Gletscherbahnhof located at the height of 2,588 metres above sea level. We walked to the south part of the mountain which is the Zugsitzplatt, a high ‘karst’ (formed from the dissolution of soluble rocks such as limestone) plateau with many caves. Three glaciers, the two largest in Germany namely, Northern Schneeferner and Höllentalferner and the third namely, Southern Schneeferner lie on the flanks of Zugspitze. The highest mountain in Germany, Zugspitze was named after the “Zugbahnen” or avalanche paths down the mountain’s notoriously steep north face and summit. Less than two weeks prior to this trip to Zugspitze in the German Alps, my husband, my son and I, had been to two more glaciers, Mt. Titlis and Glacier 3000 in the Swiss Alps. On both occasions, we had met bright, sunny weather. However, at Zugspitze, there was not the faintest sign of the sun. It felt very different and was indeed a welcome change to have good snowfall instead. It felt more like a Winter Wonderland than any other snow clad peak I have visited and I felt very close to Nature. We climbed as high up as the Church Maria Heimsuchung, which stands at the height of almost 3000 metres above sea level, defying sun, storm, wind and snow. I felt that this house of God, standing in solitude, like a sentinel in the vast expanse of snow, provides peace and protection to the skiers and winter sports enthusiasts during their visits to the glacier. On enquiring, I learnt that Catholic and Protestant Mass are celebrated on a regular basis depending on weather conditions. I felt deep reverence, not only for the Creator but also for this tiny little place of prayer as I stood high up in the snow clad mighty mountain with snow flakes falling all over us. The children had put in their snow suits and they paid no heed to the constant drizzle of snowflakes. They were busy swooping down on slides and toboggans; climbing up and sliding down again. We were constantly alert about making it back in time for the train, but we did not want to miss out on going to the Zugspitze summit. So, we made a dash for the Gletscherbahn cable car station from where cable cars runs every 10 minutes between the Zugspitz glacier and the summit. We barely had about 20 minutes to spend at the summit in order to be able to catch the last cable car down. So we rushed out being careful to remain on the German side It is said that on a clear day, four countries : Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland can be seen from the Zugspitze. However, standing in the Zugspitze platform that offered a 360 degrees view, we looked north, south, east and west; but it was too foggy and musty and there coupled with snowfall, the view was totally obscured and we could see nothing beyond a couple of metres. The only regret I felt was that we could not spot the famous golden summit cross. Given a chance, I would have loved taking a picture standing by its side. For our return, we took the aerial tram right upto Garmisch-Partenkirchen and trains to München, Nürnberg and Erlangen respectively.

I really like the skiing here. High enough for consistent good snow. Nearly as high as the Zugspitze but not as busy and often quieter than the rest of the Garmisch Classic area.

nice zoo a lot of animal much of green and trees .the anomals are in a very good situation and you have a lot to see. nice food german food in the resaturants ! lost in the map! in hot summer days you can rest in the forests!!

I love Garmisch Partenkirchen is nestled in the German alps and a gorgeous ski village, I visit every year, it is a wonderful Ski resort and offers great skiing for beginners and advanced skiers. (check snow conditions) The ski school in Garmisch is great and the ski rental is superb. Really high end skies and ski boots. The Hotels in Garmisch are great and ideal for families, couples and families. It is my favorite place on earth since I was a child. They also, like all over Germany allow you to bring your doggy everywhere which I love!.My heart is in Garmisch <3

I researched several providers and decided to book with Touristik, and my contact was Vacation consultant Klara Stadler. Klara was extremely helpful, and patiently answered my numerous emails. Thank you Klara, you were superb! My wife and I (60 y/o) did the tour with our adult daughter. We had 1 ebike and 2 normal bikes. We booked the “The Classic Tour Category B” (3* hotels) which covered 7 nights accommodation and 6 days of cycling from 9 to 15 October 2019. It was so well organised. We paid extra for the meals at night. I did stress that our accommodation had to be reasonably close to the river, and it all was. The Austrian hospitality was amazing, all the hotels were great, and the traditional food (and beverage) was delicious. We had a nice train ride from Vienna to Passau then a 30 minute uphill walk from the Passau station with our luggage to the hotel. Caught the bus to the bike shop to find a very helpful, patient man who made sure we were all happy with the gear. We then had a 3 km ride back to the hotel (IBB Hotel Passau South, Passau) in the rain. The next day we explored Passau for a few hours, before departing in drizzling rain around 2 pm. Passau was a very scenic historic town, the junction of 3 rivers. Only 30 km cycled on the first day, which was an excellent introduction. Only mishap was a flat tyre. Luckily, it happened 5 minutes from a bike shop, (who couldn't speak English) but we were on the road in no time. Spectacular scenery, was tempted to stop many times. We had a lovely hotel, Gasthof-Pension Luger, right on the river. The next day we cycled 67 km to Linz, via the Schlogen Schlinge. The cycle path was blocked for clearing so we had to catch a ferry down river for 5 km. Day 3 we walked round Linz, then cycled 59 km to Grein via the Mauthausen concentration camp. Day 4 we cycled 66 km to Mitterarnsdorf via Melk Abbey. What an amazing place. On arrival, it appeared half of Austria was in downtown Melk. It was one massive festival. We found out later they were celebrating their patron Saint Coloman of Stockerau, who would you believe is Irish. We fought our way through the crowd, then did a tour of the Abbey. Day 5 was an easy 42 km cycle to Traismauer via the historic towns of Durnstein and Krems. Our hotel was apparently 600 years old, and the same family have owned it for 300 years. Our final day six was a big day to Vienna, (73 km) We had a great start to the day and covered the 32 km to Tulln in good time.. After Tulln, we were continually riding into a gusting head wind for the rest of our journey. One minute I was sailing along at 22 km/hr, the next minute I was down to 12. So, in summary, we have no regrets and we had a fabulous week. Yes, we saw plenty of luxury cruise boats sailing by, but I think we had a much better time, and a far greater sense of achievement. Was it harder than I thought?...you bet it was. Did I do enough training? No! But we cycled the whole 340 km, it was all on 2 wheels...no free lifts involved for any of us. It was a real team effort. We’d love to do it again but take double the time to allow for more exploring.
